Part of article from Barn Stable Patriot. Clearly it was foreclosed on July 1, 1982. Clearly for 2 years of non-payments I believe. Real sad.
Bottom two courtesy of Google Map. June 2009 and August 2015. See big changes. Currently a fire department is stationed there with their brand new buidlng.
Google Map. Can you see the floor plan? Thanks to tearing it down, you can see the shape of the skating floor! Facing back wall to the right corner. Wow! I was right!
Pro Skate LTD 149 High School Road Ext., Hyannis, MA
This short lived rink, Pro Skate LTD Roller Skating Rink was on High School Road Extension in Hyannis, Massachusetts. They opened in 1980 only to be foreclosed in 1982 and closed for good in 1983. Wow, real short. Three years. Clearly the non-payment on mortgage was to be blamed likely. Why?
The Google Map showed a very short street. It is a curved street with two ends for that street in a loop. Several business and a school and a community center are located on that short street. I had to determined which and I believe it may have been demolished because nothing fits the appearance although renovations do hide the original look. Nothing matches because of the roofline which is a gable roof. It could have been that new community center, or that apartment complex that the rink was held. The photo I have could not tell where it was. Trees do grow fast and they closed in 1982 making it almost 40 years ago. So, I have to conclude that this place was demolished to make way for something else.
My educated guess it would have been 149 High School Road Ext. According to Google Map, that spot was a building which very similar characteristics of the former rink's appearance. Especially pillars on the outside. The June 2019 photo is only one on Google Map showing the building because in October 2015 photo, the building was torn down and the new one in 2019 showed beautiful fancy fire department. For now, I am using 149 address number. Please correct me if it was at the wrong spot. The evidences I can connect were the roofline, the pillars on the building wall, and the parking lot curve where the drain grate was at. Look at photo of Pro-Skate taken in 1980 and you see by 3rd pillar from left, the middle of the lot that was where the drain. I compared to Google Map 2009 the drain was still there. Parking lot showed aged with a big crack cross the lot.
The Interior.
It had beautiful Maple wood floor layout for the rink. The ceiling had White Panels and it was vaulted ceiling above the rink. Very simple and clean for its time.
They had beautiful murals on the walls by a local artist showing skaters making figure skating.
The Exterior.
Very much of a style of very late 1970s/very early 1980s look. This rendering of the appearances reminded me of Sharkey's in Rochester, NY with the similar look. And yes, the arched of the rink name style also. Both Sharkey's and Pro-Skate had their names arched. The columns with White walls between them. And a dark trim on top wall. Both rinks are similar to that style. Love the style of its day but it did not last. Both rinks are gone in 1980s. Still love the look. It was almost toward Tudor style that was popular at the time. (Yes, at the time, my bedroom was a Tudor style).
After the rink closed, they had major renovations to have different color, materials, but parking lot remained the same.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Maple, clear coated. Floor Layout: FAN.
Building Size: N/A. Built: 1980(?). Demolished: c. 2014. Now brand new fire department (5 vehicles).
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Truss Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Hip.
Acres: N/A.
Operated: 1980 to July 1, 1982.
Reason for Closure: N/A.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
