Playland Park Roller Rink 2135 Massillon Rd, Akron, OH. One of the last time the rink was open. Wow, really dead quiet in there.. I mean no other skaters. That is sad. But hey, those guys in the photo plus the photographer who took this were fortunate to skate by themselves. I did the same at Sports with just 4 of us there one rainy August evening 1984. I also noticed a step up platform on the right. I believe that has to be a dance floor. Was it? The ground floor was Drab Gray carpet with some tape over tears in the carpet as you can see between the guys and the wall on the right. Can you name those video games? Remember those? I am wondering about those guys. Did they lose something under the table? Source: Fan at Playland Park Roller Rink album for Springfield Township page. Photo originally belonged to C.W.
Playland Park Roller Rink 2135 Massillon Rd, Akron, OH. The skating floor. Made of Concrete, painted White. Appeared to be early 1970s photograph because of the 4 girls dressed like the 70s. Irish Green with Gold band mini skirt dress.. that one I have seen it before during the 70s. The Brown business attire with White ruffle shirt.. seen that in teh 1970s too. And the girl behind the three, bell bottoms! GROOVY! Source: Playland Park Roller Rink album for Springfield Township page. Photo originally belonged to C.W. Playland Park Roller Rink 2135 Massillon Rd, Akron, OH. The skating floor. And of course, the Skate Rental "house"! Of course, this was taken in 1970s. Likely same day as the 4 girls skating photo above this one. Wow, the sideburn this older gentleman talking with a well-dressed-in-suit gentleman (owner/operator?) and the mustached guy sitting down with a friend partially hidden. Note the carpet at the time was RED! GROOVY! Source: Playland Park Roller Rink album for Springfield Township page. Photo originally belonged to C.W.

Playland Park Roller Rink 2135 Massillon Rd, Akron, OH (Finally, roller rink)
Playland Park Roller Rink 2135 Massillon Rd, Akron, OH was a rink for a time however, it was originally an amusement park with a series of names changed. Originally was called Fallon's Kiddieland but soon after, it became Fallon's Play Land Park. Then shorten the name to Fallon's Park. After sold, it became Playland Park and then the addition, Playland Park Roller Rink which was the last of it. Then they went out of business.
The reason for the name of the amusement park, Fallon's was due to the owners' name. The owners/operators were Gid L. & Maggie Fallon. But they owned it from 1952 to 1971 when they sold it and the name Fallon's was dropped.
The new owners/operator of the amusement park bought it in 1971 and eventually, the rink were Robert and Sue Moegerle. They built the rink and opened on Friday, February 15, 1974. They named the new rink, Playland Park Roller Rink. That was the last major addition to the park. This was rather a very late addition because small amusement parks and trolley parks would have the skating rink built first or close to the beginning of operations. Not so with this one.
The amusement parks had a lot of rides that were very common and commonality that it was standard including a wooden roller coaster, 4 person child wooden boat ride in carousel, small Ferris Wheel, tracked automobile ride, and a paddle boat ride on the small pond. And of course, one of my favorite rides, Twist-a-Swirl ride. Also there was a miniature golf course.
In 1972, there were new rides including new mini-golf, Looper, Swing, Looper, Meteor, and two more rides.
The ad when Playland Park was up for sale in February 1980, it mentioned Putt-Putt® Golf. Really? Did they have a franchising rights for Putt-Putt® Golf? But the photo I saw for this amusement park, it showed it did NOT have the signature of Putt-Putt® Golf course design that requires it to be Hazard Orange borders for each hole. So, likely the person who wrote this ad was in error. Never name a golf course Putt-Putt® Golf because its a trademark. Like you are really not supposed to say Xerox machine although you maybe using Canon, or HP or IBM or whatever brand out there. You are supposed to say photocopy or photocopying. People like to call any mini golf course, Putt-Putt® Golf and that was the case it did happened with a Deaf club in Auburn, NY used that name and it was NOT at Putt-Putt® Golf at all and they were at a DIFFERENT mini-golf place so they were advised by the Putt-Putt® Golf Fun Center to change it so they recalled all the flyers and redo the flyers by changing to "Miniature golf" and the proper name of that mini golf course. This was in 1990s. If the club refused, they would have been sued.
The same you are not supposed to say Roller Blades for any brands including Chicago, Riedell, Moxi, or whatever brands out there that manufacture INLINE skates (proper spelling AND saying is In-line Skates).
It was said to be the amusement park and roller rink closed immediately after Sue Moegerle passed away in December 1984. I believe her husband also passed away before Sue did. Edison Ohio Company purchased in early 1995 to put transformers there near the former rink. Finally, it was demolished around 2019-2020.
UPDATE! -- 24 May 2022.
I received an email from soemone regarding this rink. Here is what she has to say.
Hello, thank you for the stroll down memory lane. My great Aunt Sue and Uncle Bob Moegerle owned Playland Park. I spent many Summer there, often standing on milk crates spinning cotton candy. They sold and moved to Florida where they continued the amusement business with their traveling show ( using the spelling "Megerle" for pronunciation purposes) and concession stands. Also owning a restaurant "The Lucky duck Lame Duck Lounge" and appearing in the move "Fun house" Aunt Sue passed first then Uncle Bob.
I have forwarded your article to my cousin's Candy, & Lynn. Hopefully you will hear from them and be able to clarify any other questions you have.
Sincerely,
H. J.
Thank you so much H.J. This helps more. Fantastic! Sorry for your losses.
The Interior.
They had Painted White Concrete floor to skate and it was simple design in a Sheet metal-Walled Warehouse-like building that even the same sheets you saw outside were inside as well. It was very basic rink. I am sure well heated in cold Ohio winter that they are not far from Erie, PA that usually gets as much snow as Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, NY gets. Brr! See Golden Snow Globe Contest. This year, Cleveland, merely a few miles from Akron is placed 17th of most snowiest (2020-2021 winter season). So, this place must have had excellent heating system.
The Exterior.
The exterior appearance was vertical stripes of Sky Blue and White. The building was demolished sometimes in early 1990s to make way for a substation transformers for Ohio Edison according to a worker who worked for the power company. He posted in the Playland Park album for Springfield Township on Facebook (Please click). So, the chance to reopen is nil. No chance.
Before closing, they had amusement park rides including a lot of rides. The rink building was a little step out of way from the core area of rides and the pond. It was pretty widespread out in the 43 AC (acres) of land.
