Petersen's Roller Rink 103 21st Street, Camanche, IA
Fox Roller Rink 103 21st Street, Camanche, IA
Roller Den 2000 103 21st Street, Camanche, IA
There were three separate names for this rink on Highway 67 (21st Street) in Camanche, IA. First it was Petersen's followed by Fox Roller Rink then the finale was Roller Den 2000.
It was around mid to late 1940s that the Petersons built the rink and opened it and ran till 1952 when Howard and Lucile A. Peterson sold the rink to Vern and Georgia Fox. This made sense when they changed the name of the rink from Petersen's to Fox. The couple owned till year 1980. They ran for a long time. The Foxes bought portions of the Maple wood floor from his brother's portable rink.
In year 1980, the next generation--their son, Gary owned the rink till year 2000. They ran Fox Roller Rink quite a long time. But in year 2000, it was sold to two people- Sandy Mussman and Cindy Gifford. It became Roller Den 2000. The 2000.. made sense because that was the year they bought it. I like the name Roller Den! Interesting. Unfortunately, they went out out of business in 2011, after running 11 years. I have no idea why they closed so soon!
It appeared to be as I thought run for a long time.
What more interesting was they had outhouses! Very basic rink at the time! Eventually outhouses were gone. But the windows stayed.
The Interior.
I have no idea what it was like for that time. However, one photo might be of Petersen's. It was Maple floor. The same was true for Fox however, for Fox, it was a new replacement Maple floor they had from Fox's brother.
They had "Disco lights" which are lights in the center that is like a ball and it shined lights from it. But the replacement was standard diamond ball (mirrored ball). The light ball was donated to a local school.
They had wooden window boards to shutter windows and opened up to let air in and had screens to keep the bugs out. I am sure the kids at the time sang this song, "There are no bugs on me." Haha.
Eventually they added a stage for bands to play for their dances or skating at the time.
I am sure with Fox Roller Rink, they added the Starburst light on the ceiling.
Now as an auction house.
The Exterior.
The building was very simple design. It had Steel sheet walls on the outside and it was Gabled roofed building with likely steel truss. There are no old photos of the rink way back but more recent times it showed it had Steel Grey with Chocolate Brown "foundation" base and Gable walls on each end. The doorway apparently had a door each-on outside and inside to keep the cold air out and warm air in during winter and summer, keeping cold air in hot air out. The doors were relocated. I do not know what it was like before the ladies moved it.
They had windows but with the two ladies owners, they closed that up filling up the windows. They added the sheet walls. Apparently before that, it was cinderblocks (my opinion).
The roof apparently also had sheet metal roof as well.
