All three -- Fulton Daily Times. All of September 1884. I see announcement of opening, and more detailed grand opening information, and has opened after the delay.
Oswego, NY Rink "A" Nicholas Hall, Oswego NY.
This rink we will call it, Oswego, NY Rink "A" because there is another Oswego (NY) rink listed that started in 1870s. This one began in September 1884. Back then reporters and even businesses that send News Release announcements would not include the name of the rinks (or any businesses) because usually towns and cities are small and everybody knows everything back then. Yes, using your brain instead of searching the internet! Yes, that is correct, brain, not internet because Internet did not come out more commonly in around 1993! 110 years later!
The rink operators were F. W. Church and Richard Burghart. The manager was C.M. Harlow.
They were scheduled to open on Tuesday September 23, 1884 instead of their scheduled planning opening on Friday September 19th, 1884 but their shipment of brand new skate rentals did not arrive in time.
Because of that, it was opened on Tuesday instead.
They had it in Nicholas Hall in the City of Oswego. I do not know where that is or was located at and do not know what street it was on. Anyone know where Nicholas Hall was? Anybody?
The rink was designed for 1000 guests because of the size of the rink and seating combined. However, they had a soft opening due it was opened on Tuesday, a work day and mixed up with scheduling. I am sure they announced for Friday and that is terrible business embarrassment because they planned for Friday night which was the end of the work week and people do go out at evening. Usually at the time it was the social class (Upper Class) who could afford and have time before laws passed to shorten time, ban child labor, etc..
Only 300 people showed up for 2 sessions. About 150 per session. That was bad. They had scheduled a band, a show, and other Grand Opening activities but because of the delay of arrival of skates, it put a damper on the opening. My advice if you were to open a business, be sure you got everything in order and ready before you turn that key to open doors to allow a crowd flocking in like crazy. Say, you think you are ready in September, open it in October instead. This is to make sure you got everything arrived with your orders from suppliers, distributors, and manufacturers. Then open doors then you can go ahead and then do the refill as soon as possible thanks to computers. This means be sure you get skate rentals ready when they come to the door! Directly from the manufacturer! Now days you can track your order.
Like I did with my business News Release with Dead-Rinks last month (November 2020) after spending 2 years making 2000 profiles on rinks (give or take). Enough to show the media what Dead-Rinks is all about instead of doing in December 2018 because I had just a very few. That is my point.
The article did say the management team were happy with the number of people came.
The opening was a soft opening and actual grand open to public was the following Tuesday on.
The reporter who was there reporting said it was good and had no doubt that the locals would patronize the rink well.
This rink's operation length was unknown. Likely few years. Not long. Many rinks back the day do not last long. Only go along with the fad which is about seven years cycle. Might have folded in 1890s.
The Interior.
Large Maple floor (likely it was Maple) with numerous of seating in stadium like setting for shows and performance and competitions. The seating would accommodate at 1000 people.
To me, it sounds like 30 thousand square feet, maybe more.
The Exterior.
Unknown.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Clear coated Maple. Floor Layout: N/A.
Building Size: N/A. Built: N/A. Demolished: N/A.
