Oak Park Skating Rink North 16th Street (?), Seward, NE
Anderson Skating Rink North 16th Street (?), Seward, NE
First was Oak Park Skating Rink then Anderson Skating Rink. Both of West Seward. However, to pinpoint where, it is un-found. I have no street address. There are clues. It says cross from the Fairgrounds Amphitheater. I see the theater is gone. They rebuilt this county fair as all new and modern according to their website. If so that is the case, it says "Cross from the river." This means Big Blue River. Exact location is unknown. Many changes occurred since its closure some time ago. On the map, I see all farm fields west of the river. Anyone know where exactly it was? Likely on North 16th Street but I am not sure.
This was part of Oak Cabin Park that the Andersons, Bud and Harold purchased and remodeled in 1947.
Currently the Oak Cabin Park is now Centennial Park with picnic pavilions and a playground.
The Interior.
Having said in the article, the building was extremely SMALL! 50 feet by 20 feet! My studio where I am working on my Dead-Rinks is 15 feet wide by 20 feet wide. I know what 20 feet is like! Very narrow! Might be the smallest rink I ever found...so far. (non-residential rink, mind you!) I believe the writer heard wrong. Cannot be that narrow! It has to be wider. And longer.
The floor was polyurethane or some kind of plastic, not wood or concrete. However, something has to be under the plastic floor. They were ahead of their time with having a plastic floor which was not common at the time in 1940s.
The Exterior.
The article in Blue Valley Blade said that it had 14 windows on each side on the North and South side of the building plus 2 each on East and West.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A Floor: Plastic Floor Layout: Standard
Building Size: 50' x 20' (very small! Has to be an error. Article did say very large building).
Built: May 1946 to 1947. Demolished: Likely.
Type of Building: N/A
Roof: N/A
Acres: N/A
Operated: Sunday August 31, 1947 to N/A
Reason for Closure: N/A
Wanted: Information regarding photos, exact date of closure, why closed? Where was it exactly and the location address?
