Newport Roller Rink 630 Hurbert SW, Newport, OR. You can not see the dance studio sign that well from this corner because it is to the right of the pub's sign on the front side of the building where the HHR is parked. The Pacific Ocean is just a stone throw and visible from where the former rink is. Source: Google. 2018.
Newport Roller Rink, 630 Hurbert SW, Newport, OR
This rink was quite historic since it was first built and opened in 1907. However, it went out of business and it became a dance studio in 1978.
The rink must have ran this quite long time from 1907 or 1908 to 1978. That would be 70 years long. It survived the Great Depression and World Wars. And thrived during Great American Economy of 1945 to 1957.
It was in town where you had to park your car on the side of the street. It was a two story building. I do not have any more information regarding the rink location at that place because I am not sure which floor it was located. Likely second floor because of a dance studio owns the building now.
It has cinder blocks and bricks on the first floor and likely second too but covered by wood siding. It has a gable roof as seen in the photo and part of flat roof so its called Combination. It is really flat roof. It is all Grey as of present day. I am not sure what color it was back then.
The building has a good number of windows and likely the rink itself had windows as well. Many early 20th Century and even 19th Century rinks had windows compared to modern day rinks that has no windows because they are in sheet metal warehouses these days.
The rink may have not been that big from what I see in the photo. Unfortunately the rink closed and the figure skaters hung up skates and put on dance shoes instead and danced the nights away. It is a dancing studio where you can learn how to dance. Several Styles though because the website did show they are quite more than just ballet. They have all kinds of dances. Sounds like a good dance studio.
I have no photos of the rink itself because there are no photos. Unfortunately.
Anyone has photos? Please submit and I will post it here. Any other information about the rink, please do let me know!
This rink name is not to be confused the now defunct Newport Skate Center which was an ice rink. That one closed on February 28, 2017. Now being developed as a hotel there.
