Roll-a-Way Skating Center 600 West Church Street, Newark, OH (Still operating)
Newark Roller Rink 600 West Church Street (Rear), Newark, Ohio was a roller rink before the current Roll-a-Way Skating Center which is still operational.
Rosetta Naomi Griffith (February 16, 1938 - September 14, 2021) (I do not know exactly her role involving with Roll-a-Way Skating Center) was quite involved with the rink and one skating patron said she worked in the ticket booth. But I believe she had a greater role there. Everyone called her, "Mom". She interacted with patrons there, the skaters and parents alike.
I have no way to contact the rink! No website, only Facebook and there is NO messenger on there. They even still using old fashioned way-- cash only for admission, food, and purchases. Truly sticking with the old fashioned way. Phone number is on there but I do not make calls. In fact, it is a recording to tell you schedules. So, this is a dead-end for me to ask about Newark Roller Rink that was operational before Roll-a-Way. Although I am aware of that the family operated Roll-a-Way.
Was this rink really owned by Rosetta Griffith, the icon who passed away in September 2021? It is possible. There is no other information since her passing on that Facebook page. It brings that "Unsolved Mysteries" to this page.
Maybe you can solve the case today after reading this. (twisting from Robert Stack's line). Email me at

Teenagers cannot walk to the rink and the score is zero according to this site, Smart Capital.
Google Map will point the pin at the wrong building. It is the REAR of that building to let you be aware of when you want to go skating at this interesting rink.
The Interior.
I do not know the interior was like when it began. This apparently was operating for quite a long time. it has been operating for more than 60 years. Of course, new rugs, paints, chairs.
They have chairs that are quite familiar to skaters and myself-- school chairs with the three vertical opening on the colorful plastic chairs. The party room looked way much like a cafeteria in any schools including the schools I went to.
Of course, they had dinette that are standard laminated just like any fast food restaurant would have.
Some of the floors off the rink are wood while the other are carpeted throughout. The arcade area and in front of the DJ-skate rental has wood floor. The long laminated benches are facing the wall instead of the rink itself.
They have brick wall where the DJ booth and skate rentals are. I can see the two sections are one section sharing. Apparently to cut costs having just one person handle both DJ and rentals. Music usually last six minutes average so it is enough time to handle about 2 to 3, maybe 4 skaters per song playing. Today at many rinks, if they can afford, a laptop or a desk top to log all the songs for the entire session and you just push enter button and it plays for 3 hours and the DJ walks away and do something else. Automated DJ they can do today.
The appearance look friendly and attractive inside for a rink in 2020s. I love the lights when they are on.. those "UFOs" Danish saucer pendents and the classic Starburst lights (2) on the ceiling over the beautiful Rotunda Maple wood floor.
The Exterior.
It is a classic appearance of 1950s look Segmental Arch with Flat Roofs. The walls are Cinderblocks painted 50 percent Cold Gray with 80 or 90 percent Cold Gray stripe with Yellow accent for a small Canopy above the front door. No windows are seen. It is very plain looking. Very simple. Low budget if you want to call that. Not fancy but functional.
I do not know what the original look was.
