New Coliseum Roller Rink 944 First Street, LaSalle IL
New Coliseum Roller Rink 944 First Street, LaSalle Illinois. This was once a rink after they had an automobile repair shop.
Here is what I received an email today from a Christian leader of this church who just bought this property where a roller rink was. Here is what he has to say --
Greetings, our church just purchased a building. One of the history papers state that it was a roller rink. Here’s what it says - 944 First Street LaSalle Illinois, built in 1926 as a 100 car garage. The New Coliseum roller rink operated here from about 1938 to 1946/51.
Unfortunately that’s all I have been able to find so far. The wood floor is long gone- it’s been in various industries since then - and now a church :)
We are a non denominational Bible teaching Christian church. This building has been clad with steel siding and the windows downsized for efficiency. We hope to put it back to its original, down town, brick & mortar look. I am researching old photos to try to make plans. Whatever I find, I will pass on to you. It’s a tough road though, most folks have passed on, and who knows what became of their photos.
Thanks.
Wow, thank you Brother John. God bless you for that. I am still working on list from Ohio although almost done. Then I go on to Michigan, Indiana, then finally Illinois. It will be three months or so before I can reach to that state.. April 2022.
It is common that many churches buy former roller rink because of excellent open space that are free-span which makes it easier for church members to see the pastor preach God's Word and to see the choir sing and praise God's beautiful songs.
First was a 100 car garage which was common in many towns to have such garage where mechanics fix including this one. But they lasted from 1926 to 1938. Then the rink. After the rink closed in somewhere between 1946 and 1951, it became industry of sorts. Many come and go until late 2021, a church purchased the building to turn into a house of worship.
The Interior.
It was said to be open span so that cars can be driven in to be repaired and driven out without damages. They also had Maple wood floor.
The Exterior.
The Flat roofed Free-Span Steel Trusses Steel - Walled Warehouse - like Building was designed originally for a car garage and had garage doors. Perhaps one up front and another on side for one way through. I believe the rear part was added. That part would perhaps add 10 more cars. 100? That sounds like a lot of cars to fit in this 21,500 Square Feet building.
It has a Step Roof line in the front but it was Flat as seen on Google but it may really be Gabled. Hard to tell.
It sits in a corner. It may have been Bricks considering it was built in 1928. Likely bricks. But the front and side may have been an add on to cover the Brick Veneer. Maybe Wood but it does look like Steel.
It appeared to be somewhat of a Khaki color. walls currently. Colors have come and go since they renovated on the outside.
The Stats:
