Montvale Roller Dome / Montvale Roller Rink / The Rink Chestnut Ridge Rd, Montvale, NJ. You can see the rink floor compared to off rink. What a difference! Both on and off rink were wood. It is actually a LOG CABIN STRAIGHT layout because you can easily see it off rink by the rail on bottom of this photo. It does look Rotunda but I think that is the Polyurethane or Epoxy finish because you can see the layout of straight log cabin format. I know its hard to see in any photos of rinks. There were a few rinks including Magic Glo, Montvale Roller Drome, Montvale Roller Rink, The Rink, and The Rink in Montvale 1 Chestnut Ridge Road in Montvale, New Jersey. They had many ownership and operators come and go as well as names changed. Let break down in outline format --
- First owner / operator was Warren Westphal who ran from 1962 to 1964. Just two short years.
- The next one was Henry Malluck from 1964 to 1965. Yes, even shorter! What happened?
- Then Lou Collichio who owned and operated a little longer from 1965 to May 1984.
- Finally, a company owned the rink, Imperial Sterling Co. from May 1984 to 1992.
They had organ music. They were Peggy O'Leary in 1964, then Al De Luca but when Al De Luca left, he took the Morton Pipe Organ with him to another rink. I do not know why he took it.
There were several rink names. First likely Mortvale Roller Dome from 1962 to 1964 but I cannot verify however, I have so far is for Mortvale Roller Rink that operated from 1964 to 1992.
-Louis Collichio also operated the Velvet Roller Skating Rink in Keansburg.
AKA: Velvet Drome, Velvet Skateland Arena, Belvedere Roller Skating Rink, Belvedere Arena & Pool.
I do not know when Magic Glo Rink was operating. It is a name I found on one of the database I use online. This is bit confusing. There are needing more research to be done. I found a lot of information and one of the largest information but still Magic Glo and Mortvale Roller Dome are missing information. Will need your help!
Well, the next names in series of names are The Rink, and The Rink In Montvale. Both are aka.
The Operators were Bob and Marianne Dill who operated from 1992 to 2007. The Organist was Bill Fellows and they must have had another organ because Al De Luca from the past took the Morton Pipe Organ. He must have asked permission to take it with him or one of the operators told Al to take it and would have a replacement.
There was a complicated reasoning for closure. The Letter to the Editor made it clear why. It was featured in The Record - Sunday, 4 February 2007.
Like I said, this is one of most complicated and most historical recorded ever! Right?
The skating rink was demolished to make way for a 108-unit housing for people over 55 / Seniors.
The Interior.

Montvale Roller Rink: Sky Blue Polyurethane coated Straight Log Cabin Maple floor for the rink but they changed to Clear (non-color) Polyurethane because of blue plastics got into the air, HVAC, even hair! So, it was sanded and redone. However, décor is unknown and may have updated few times per owner/operator.
The Rink: Clear color Polyurethane coated Straight Log Cabin Maple floor for the rink. Same floor even it became The Rink in Montvale. The Rink is as known as.
The Rink in Montvale: Clear color Polyurethane coated Straight Log Cabin Maple floor for the rink. For sure it was updated. More fixtures, more lights, The photo appeared the place to look more like a night club rather than a roller rink. But it is a "night club roller rink" if you will. A lot of neon lights all over the place. Very 1980s-1990s look. Very strong décor of the Memphis Group style. A mix though with 1950s Retroism is found as you can see in the photos. I wish they had more photos but only found what I could find. Purple and Teal were the popular colors at the time. Everything had those colors. Diners, Fast food restaurants, even recreational boats, cruisers, snowmobiles, and clothing were in those colors. Even in Back to the Future where Marty McFly went in the 50s Retroism diner on the corner cross from the Clock Tower at the City Hall in 2015. This rink I would have to say is the best in this class. Beautifully restored interior and everything. That is too bad that some jerks on the board and the mayor said no to expansion. The property lines.. it was a mess. Parking lot on one side, rink on the other side of the town line. Had they expanded to include driving range, this style would have remained throughout to around 2010s and could have updated at that time into Starbucks Minimalist Cubism look of Red, Brown, Tan or Sand, or into Barndo (I came up meaning barn-look condo) look which is rustic barn look with tin sheets, Bleached wood, etc.
The Exterior.
Note- All were of same building with Segmental Arch. Like Crossbow Arch Truss. Below are description of appearance.

For abandoned rinks, after you receive permission, do WEAR safety OSHA equipment including a safety glasses, pair of safety gloves, an orange vest or a jacket, and a construction helmet.
Thank you for understanding.
Dead Rinks is now International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© because many former names have become new names at the same rinks that are still active and due to much confusion, We have decided that International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© fits better for all rinks including defunct, closed, inactive, rebooted, and rinks that are still active today. For short on this site, it is International Roller Skating Rinks History© Bear with us as we change the entire site page by page each day. Thank you for understanding.
Second of all: The contents including words and photos above on this page and/or on any pages are purely educational entertainment purposes only. I provide what information from other websites, skaters, and operators and it may end up with different results between two (or more) sources. It is not our responsible for errors we caused. All sources are shown on each page. All opinions and statements of mine are also stated and are for purely educational entertainment only.
Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former. Since we are rebooted to allow alive rinks, active rinks, we welcome those active rinks as well. It will be described.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
