Mineola skating rink (Mineola Fair Grounds), South of Old County Road, Mineola, Long Island, NY
The skating rink was part of the Mineola Fair Grounds in Nassau County. It was a town fair grounds similar to county fairgrounds and state fairgrounds but in small scale.
They had national championship held at the rink in 1955.
There is no exterior of the rink however, the interior clearly showed it was curved roof format with straight truss supporting the curved roof. Some of the truss were exposed beams. The floor was of course, wood. In the picture, it looks very spacious and open. There were ornament decor design from post to post the arches. Many architectural building featured this look. As for the lights, they had UFO-shaped pendants hanging from the ceiling. They apparently metal with lights shining up, not down. This gives that UFO look. This is way before 1947 Roswell Incident involving with UFO saucer shaped or even Arnold Kenneth witnessing saucer shaped merely shortly before Roswell? Was this all Mandala Effect? No tricks. I doubt not. It was the style for many homes and commercial buildings.
This rink was designated for skate dances hence the championship in 1955. They had a lot of spot lights according to this another postcard with lights on. It would be forerunner to Disco spot lights. Was this rink had glimmer blinds upon the arches? Yes, they had those glimmers hanging according to the pictures. The rink was quite popular and crowded.
A real good link describing this rink is found on www.susan-a- miller.com website very detailed with photographs. This website is excellent to show history of rinks.
