Hoover Skate Arena 4623 Hoover Avenue, Dayton, OH (Still Operational)
Mayo Skating Rink was the first Black-owned roller rink in the nation that happens to be in Dayton, Ohio. Its original street location is unknown. It was said to be on the city's West Side. It began in 1948. It ran until 1965 when Mark Mayo Sr. and son Harry Mayo (Sr.) operated there and replaced the Mayo Skating Rink with the new larger still-operating rink called Hoover Skate Arena 4623 Hoover Avenue, Dayton.
The original location was at James H McGhee Boulevard at McCall Street in Dayton, Ohio. The building has long since torn down to make room for the boulevard. It was right long the railroad... See Update on 11 July 2022.
UPDATE! -- 10 July 2022.
I was informed that there is a new street name now. Here is what I received in the email --
I forgot to let you know that Western Avenue is now James H McGhee in Dayton, Ohio. That's where the old Mayo Skating Rink is located. A light blue building with a Donkey mounted on the premises. Back in the 60's.
Ok, thank you G.K. for the information. Now back to this.
It appeared they operated the rink for quite a long time.
UPDATE! -- 11 July 2022.
Once again, G.K. emailed me a follow up because he got more information. Actually 2 emails.. Here is what he has to say..
I don't have an address but I do remember that building being in that area. Around the James H McGhee and McCall Ave area. There are or was Railroad tracks that went right up the side street in which the Mayo building was on. If I find out the name of the street I'll let you know.
Then he found more information and followed up with this...
They have torn down those building in that area to put the new Highway up. Sorry. But that was the location.
Ah thank you G.K. for your information.
Thank you Harry Mayo Sr. for defending the Constitution of the United States and our Faith in the LORD Jesus Christ. Harry served in the United States Air Forces (USAF) in the country for two years, still that was called serving for our country, the United States of America (USA).
They opened the rink, then Harry went to serve and I am sure his father, Mark operated the rink while Harry served. Then when he returned in 1954 after two years of service, they went on to work the rink until 1965 when it became Hoover Skate Arena. It was family operation. It was quite the reason for the relocation and renamed is to expand due to ever growing crowd of skaters attending the rink.
Harry Jr. had several successful businesses along the way in course of his life.
In 1969 he became one of the first minority-owned industrial suppliers to General Motors, providing packaging and assembly services.
“Mayo Industries in 1975 became one of the first minority suppliers in the country to surpass over $1 million in sales,” his family’s statement said. “By 1990 Mayo Industries and their affiliate companies were housed in over 1,000,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehousing space with over 150 employees in eight different facilities.”

Thank you for understanding.
Second of all: The contents including words and photos above on this page and/or on any pages are purely educational entertainment purposes only. I provide what information from other websites, skaters, and operators and it may end up with different results between two (or more) sources. It is not our responsible for errors we caused. All sources are shown on each page. All opinions and statements of mine are also stated and are for purely educational entertainment only.
Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
