Maul Skate Palace 25 South Kahului Beach Road, Maui, Hawaii. This article gave a look back but very general information because she did not state exact dates. Source: Honolulu Advertiser. Sunday May 18, 2008.
Maui Skate Palace 25 South Kahului Beach Road, Maui, HI
Family Life Center Roller Rink 25 Kahulai Beach Rd., Wailuku, HI
Family Life Center Roller Rink 25 Kahulai Beach Rd., Wailuku, HI
Both Maui Skate Palace and the Family Life Center Roller Rink were in the same location. I almost did not realize that. Anyway, they were rare in Hawaii. I believe it is several factors why Hawaii never had more rinks: hot humid but nice weather in Hawaii as well as the islands are small about the size of maybe Connecticut and Rhode Island together. Who knows.
Anyway, There is not much history but a hint of it from a single article. That is it. ONE article.
Originally it was Emjay's a G-store that was a specially store (think Trader Joe's). which did not last that long. From 1972 to late 1970s when the rink began. Then the Maui Skate Palace that everyone knew. Then the rink needed money so likely in my opinion how this happened that the church came in to use the rink on Sunday mornings and they actually built a platform so the pastor can preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to his church members sitting in chairs that were on the rink. Because of this, the alternation of the floor changed into a "C"-shaped rink because of the platform! Then the rink went under and the church took over and called it Family Life Center Roller Rink as part of that Assembly of God church. The church owned the 40,000 SF building after the rink folded. After the church grew, they built a new church near by and the building became an automobile dealership for a time before it became a home building specialty shopping center with a tile store, carpet store, and an interior design center which the plaza served remains to this day. The rink dates are unknown but likely under 5 years.
Timeline --
1970/1972: Enjays, a G-store opens
Late 1970s: Maui Skate Palace opens, ran very brief
Early 1980s: First Assembly of God Church moved in rink and ran on Sundays as other days roller rink, eventually Skate Palace closed, reopened as Family Life Center Roller Rink. (1980 to 1991)
1991: Church moved out into new facility due to growth of new members during 1980s Church Revivalism everywhere.
1991 to December 2007: Imported automobile dealerships.
December 2007 to present: Interior design S-stores.
Note: the Maui Skate Palace Facebook group is no longer exists.
The Interior.
While there are no photographs, the rink was described by a writer. It was Sky-Blue roller rink floor. Likely Poured concrete floor with Polyurethane coat because of the paint. It had a diamond mirrored ball (disco ball), and much of pinball machines. It was 40 thousand square feet which is considered a pretty large rink. I can picture that. Likely they had pretty large rink but one source said part of the building it was a fitness center. Likely 30,000 SF for the rink as 10 for the fitness.
The Exterior.
It was a warehouse like Free span steel truss building that was entirely different look. It did look more like a plaza than a warehouse according to the photos. Plazas usually have Flat roof but this was more like a warehouse with Gable roof.
The Stats:
Rink Size: Likely 30,000 SF Floor: Poured Concrete, Sky-Blue Polyurethane coat Floor Layout: Standard then changed to C-shaped rink because church added platform on one side of the rink as a permanent stage making skaters go around that instead of running into it.
Building Size: 40,000 SF Built/Renovation: Likely 1972, renovated late 1970s, again 1981 for dealer/store. Demolished: Still standing, expanded by title store.
Type of Building: Free Span Steel Truss Concrete Walled warehouse-like Building.
Roof: Gable
Acres: N/A
Operated: 1970s to very early 1980s (exact dates are unknown)
Reason for Closure: Financially unable to float. Many skaters injured there hence many did not return.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open and closed, photos of the building and the rink inside. Why they folded? Anyone has pictures and/or information please let me know at [email protected]. Thank you.
