I really love the entrance look. Very 1980s look in 2009! Retro! At the time Retro was the in vouge. It was nice to see the 80s again. Love the neon lights sign! It reads "RENTALS" then something I cannot make that word out. And they had a sign above on the right. I am not sure what that sign was all about. Anyone? Mainstreet USA Skate Center 23 W Streamwood Blvd, Streamwood, IL
Mainstreet USA Skate Center 23 West Streamwood Boulevard, Streamwood, Illinois was a rink at one time. They operated in Greater Chicago Metro.
It was was founded in 1993 according to Rink-Time however, the building was built in 1976. Was the rink originally opened in 1976? Please verify. Thank you!
It was owned and operated by the Rollin Family. They had to close on 30 May 2012 because of the high taxes on the property which amounted to 72,000 US Dollars! Way too much, Streamwood! That is socialism that needs to be stopped. It is very clear what Chicago and Illinois is all about- Democrats controlled and crimes are paramount, high taxes, So, this is why businesses leaving or closed for good.
I can be very political here and you heard enough in one simple paragraph. This disgusted me about taxes. Many rinks closed since 1980s because of this and high insurance. Enough! So, they had to sell the rink. It was last sold for 391,500 USD in 2013. I pray they Rollins were able to pay for taxes because that was like about a third to a forth of the total of sale price they sold in 2013.
Another thing, Besides the tax, they also owed this amount of money: 688,449 USD. I believe that was the mortgage! It went into Pre-Foreclosure in January 20, 2012, the day Obama sworn in for his 2nd term.
But they had awesome grand reopening when they renovated in 2009 between July 4th and mid-August that they had "Black tie" look interior with white balloons, beautiful tiny White Christmas lights.. Some gold as well.. all directed as formal and fancy. They did excellent job. And the finale too with the final session they were all colorful as well with much of balloons. This place had quite a bit of balloons hanging and they even had balloons for a parade.
I love this rink with much creativity. Sad they are closed.
UPDATE! -- Sunday 13 February 2022.
I received an email from a DJ who used to work at this rink. Very interesting! Always learned something new. I agree with what he said here...
Found your web site, I worked there around 1980/81 as a DJ. Had fond memories. That property tax bill of 72k seemed insane. The property appraisal value must have been totally screwed up. They should have gotten a lawyer to file for them, if it really sold for what you mentioned then the rate should have been much lower. Plus, Streamwood wouldn't have controlled the property taxes that would be the township. Its all public information, but I bet the commercial value of the property was inflated with the McDonalds and other things near by. That again could have been challenged. But, its too late now. There are huge office buildings like the Willis Tower (once known as Sears Tower) that challenged the taxes. Sad story for them.
I had thought of writing a book about Mainstreet USA and how it helped my career or lack of career at the time. It was fun and today I still keep in contact with several of the friends I made so long ago.
Take care,
Tom.
Yeah, I agree with you and they could have done something. Sadly, they did not and too late. Yeah, the formerly named Sears Tower fought to lower taxes. Major businesses and owners of buildings tend to fight. Small guys.. harder or not thought of or just give up. Many rink operators did that in 1980s because of real estate value went up big time since except for 2006 to 2011 of the Great Recession at the time.
Tom, I pray you can still write a book about this rink. One author did who is from a skating family and wrote a book about Skate Odyssey and mailed me a copy for my research and to read.
The Interior.
They had White painted, Polyurethane coated, Concrete floor that was standard for their rink. They often had lights appearances for the rink.
They have exposed Steel beams trusses and usually hides well with decorations and themed balloons and other décor materials. This is why I love their interior design for this part. Really they put a lot of work into it time to time. That is what made this rink function well and could have lasted many more decades I might add because of their creativity. But no, those taxes! Uncle Sam needs to go on a diet! Hear that Democrats? NO more taxes!
The photos above are very self-explanatory regarding the appearances.
The Exterior.
I am finding that the property was actually three parts when they owned this and this might be a reason why it was high. Three separate properties as one for the rink. Each one almost the same size. Slot A had 0.6334 Acre while Slot B had 0.6117 Acre, and Slot C has 0.6063 Acre. This means 1.8514 Acre. Almost 2 Acres of land for a commercial in the greater Windy City Metro. Like New York City and San Francisco and Seattle, they are quite expensive real estate and taxes that can cause people to be homeless. Chicago is also facing runaway inflation.
Understand this that this is why the rink closed.
The exterior was beautiful with two toned colors-- Royal Blue and Snow-White. Really contracting very well with outlines and balance of color. It was very attractive on the exterior.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: White painted, Polyurethane coated, Concrete. Floor Layout: Standard.
Building Size: N/A. Built: 1982. Renovations: N/A. Demolished: N/A.
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Trusses Steel - Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Gable.
Acres: 1.8514 AC (overall 3 slots).
Operated: (Overall)-- 1993 to 2020.
Reason for Closure: Closed due to high property taxes of 72,000 USD! That is way too much, Streamwood! That is your fault! (Closed during Obama Presidency and this being in Democrat-controlled state).
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos/articles. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you. You can also use this form.
