Long Beach Skate-A-Rama 5557 Daugherty Rd., Long Beach MS. The former Long Beach Skate-A-Rama. Actually, there are two buildings on this property. The former rink and a manufactured home (Single wide) in the back (hard to see, I know because of thick growing trees by the building and front of the house (look at right center of the photo.) Long Beach Skate-A-Rama 5557 Daugherty Rd., Long Beach MS. There was a skate-a-thon at the time. I believe it is connected to the next one as you will read it. Source: Sun Herald (Biloxi, MS), Wednesday 29 December 1971.
Long Beach Skate-A-Rama 5557 Daugherty Rd., Long Beach MS. This one they had a Skate-A-Thon related to the funny man Jerry Lewis's Telethon when the Late Jerry Lewis had his annual show on a network for so many years raising money for MDA. At the time I believe it was RSROA raised quite a bit of money which was the second largest contributor. Acme Fun Center 5557 Daugherty Rd., Long Beach MS (Non-rink)
Once there was Long Beach Skate-A-Rama which was on 5557 Daugherty Road in Long Beach, Mississippi. But it was short lived and then Roller Express Skate Center was there then Acme Fun Center was there.
No, it was not that coyote's favorite Store. This was an entertainment center for the place called Acme Fun Center which was operational long after the Long Beach Skate-A-Rama closed. Now, the fact is Acme Fun Center also closed.
Barbara Bormann at one time owned and operated the Long Beach Skate-a-Rama while Maureen Reynolds owned Roller Express Skate Center.
It was Mr. and Mrs. Carl Keel owned Long Beach Skate-a-Rama for a time (owned for about 8 years).
First it was a roller rink that opened in late 1984 but they closed in 1989 and something else was there then they closed too then Acme Fun Center owner(s) bought it, they converted to several activities other than roller skating in June-ish 2013. They included inflatable fun houses, glow in dark mini golf, party rooms, and giant toy car track but not a roller rink at all. They closed in 2019.
Since the building was built in 1965, what was it there before Long Beach Skate-A-Rama opened in 1984? Anyone?
It is up for sale for 199,000 USD! Wow, what a steal! Good price! I understand why prices are cheap there because it is the state and the high disaster area involving tornados, hurricanes and flooding. Sorry, that is my humble opinion.
This rink has a lot of holes in its history and information so anyone know more about it, please notify me through my email. Thank you.
UPDATE! -- 13 February 2022.
I received an email from someone regarding rink. Here is what she has to say.
I don't know exactly when it opened but I used to skate there in 1977 or 1978? It was actually my first job. Me and my cousin would work the skate counter in exchange for free skating. I think I was 13. I'd guess they sold it at some point because I found an article about the owners and it said they ran it for 8 years.
Oh wow, this is great information! This would be helpful. Really!
Order of Timeline:
1965 to 1989 - Long Beach Skate-A-Rama
1989 to 1991 - empty
1991 to 19 October 2006 - Roller Express Skate Center
N/A to after 2007 - Catholic church
After 2007 to late 2010s - Acme Fun Center (non-roller rink).
Late 2010s to present: empty.
The Interior.
It has six bathrooms! Must be 4 in the building and two in the manufactured home! It is a 14,832 Square Feet building. I do not know what material the rink floor was the time. The remaining square foot up to 17,500 was the manufactured home square footage (almost 3,000 Square feet manufactured home). This is the total for both the building and the manufactured home.
The Exterior.
It was a standard Free-Span Steel Truss Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof. I like what the landscape appearance (see photo) that the trees were lined up in front to hide that long building and focus on the front. I do not have any photos of the rink but it was open in 1965. All white walls.
There is a single wide trailer in the back of the property hidden behind the trees. Likely the owner of the rink once lived there.
