All four of Google Map. Except bottom right above with the for sale sign. It was heavily modified because of blurry on the "For" so I created one just to play around replacing the "For" And removed the business name and contact.
Google Map of the entire grounds. It was called Magnolia Square. Sounds like a plaza but an entertainment center. Yes, even entertainment centers are losing businesses. This one, many Funscapes if you remembered them, and, of course, the 49th Galleria, Old Chicago, as well as Many more I have listed and not listed.
All courtesy of Lollipops Skating and Entertainment Center. From top to bottom: Eat area with long indoor style picnic tables with party rooms behind. Next is the wall for the practice area featuring Roo. Each step to learn how to skate. Next photo is a mural, once again with Roo and a couple of kids on a wall in one of the party room. The next three is the rink floor. Those photos were taken when they were finishing up before grand re-opening in 2010 according to Facebook photo. They were painting the white part in sort of Van Gogh Ugh Yellow. (Compare that to Sunburst Yellow cushions on the poles. The graphic part on those walls.. Never seen like that before.
Lollipops Skating and Entertainment Center 9099 Hwy 51 N, Southaven, MS
No, it is not the Lollipops Guild from the land of Oz but an actual Lollipops Skating and Entertainment Center that closed on September 19, 2014 along with Cotton Bowl Lanes. No, not that same Cotton Bowl mind you! It was a bowling place, not a stadium at Texas State Fair where another rink used to be at right next door, the Cotton Bowl Roller Rink. (It used to be called Fair Park Roller Rink).
Before they closed, they had on Facebook, the banner with bunch of Lollipops. Clearly the market they targeted are for children in a place that is made for all ages.
They were originally established in 1995. That was 19 years of operations.
The Lollipops and Cotton Bowl center also had movie theaters as part of the entertainment center. But they all folded that year.
You can see on Google Map the for sale sign.
What surprises me is that their Facebook page is still running and I like that they kept it on for fans to remember where they skated. I wish every rink that have Facebook page to maintain on FB even beyond closure so that fans can enjoy that page or group. Let it become a memorial page like many groups of former rinks have on set up by fans and former employees of those respective rinks. Same with any other businesses and entertainment.
Cotton Bowl Lanes began at that plaza or center in 1973 according to Bizapedia. Now from what I understand how the bowling center was, it did affected the nicer looking Lollipops due to its appearance and from what bowlers said in this website--- Bowling.
It is the same function as they say, "One rotten apple spoils all apples in a barrel." That is very true in this metaphor for this center. Shopping malls are in the "same boat."
Now it is a church, Southpoint Church that occupy the majority of the place while the other part is a film school, Desoto Arts Institute. Very interesting.
The Interior.
It has very unusual design inside. It even has four posts that are on the rink. Not in one straight line like some rinks do. But this one is more of 2 on one side and 2 on other. The Clear Coated Polyurethane coated Maple floor was very wide. It is almost square in size with rounded corners. Reason for this is because of those 4 posts. This is why I said it is very unusual for a rink of this method. I can see it was designed for skaters to just skate on the outside of the posts. They could have walled rounded that inside of the 4 posts.
They had different appearance before 2010 renovation to show the look that the 2010s had Van Gogh Ugh Yellow with Standard Blue. You can tell with the different Yellow on the posts which are Sunburst Yellow.
Beautiful floor though. But not sure about those posts there. And its rounded. Reminds me of.. you know.. Not saying it but anyway, It was alright.
The murals were okay. I have seen excellent art work. This was more of.. like a young person especially a teenager would paint. No offense. Needed some work though. Could have used Lollipops instead because it is the easiest to draw on the wall as outline and paint.
The Exterior.
From what I saw on Google Map, it did appear very dated fast. When it was operational, the appearance looked very 1970s. Of course, Cotton Bowl Lanes began in 1973. Clearly it was built in 1972-73 and that is how it happened. Was this place a shopping mall? Maybe.
It also had an ice cream stand separately from the mall section.
Clearly the rink was on the right side when you are coming in from the road because of the bowling place on the left side. Theaters are likely behind it.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Non-paint Polyurethane coated Maple. Floor Layout: STRAIGHT.
Building Size: 112,382 SF. Built: N/A. Demolished: Still standing, abanonded.
Type of Building: Columned Span Steel Truss Cinderblocks-Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Flat.
Acres: 9.22 Acres.
Operated: (Overall)-- 1995 to September 19, 2014.
Reason for Closure: N/A. (Seem entire center closed every venues there roughtly same time.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
