Land O’ Dance Roller Rink was a roller rink in Canton, Ohio. So was Canton Skateland.
Note, do not confuse with Skateland Canton which is still operational in state of Illinois nor North Canton Skate Center.
North Market Realty Company owned the Land O' Dance Roller Rink but it was leased to William Scholle from Cleveland. William owned and operated other rinks in Cleveland, Kent, and Brady Lake-- all in Ohio. This quite interesting that a few corporates owned rinks at the time. USA and AOW owned many rinks as well back in 20th Century.
Lee H. Hillman purchased the rink from North Market Realty Company for 45,000 USD in April 14, 1945 (Billboard). However, William Scholle was still operating the rink and was already remodeling the rink at the time of the sale. Because of the renovations, William renamed the rink Skateland. Apparently because of one-two punch: was sold to a private person rather than corporate and the renovations so it appeared to be that was the reason why the renaming. I do not have start date for Land O' Dance Roller Rink or the change over date and the closure of Skateland for good. Anyone?
Also where was this rink originally located? I looked and it may have been this building that is huge. Looked so new but it has been around since 1950s according to USGS maps. Anyone can pinpoint? Please let me know.
But in January 1947, William Scholle who by then became co-owner and Lee H. Hillman relocated the rink to the King Cole Building at the Stark County Fairgrounds in Canton, OH. The reason for the move was not clear. Perhaps they relocated because they needed more room. This might be why: They had a larger floor of 100 Feet Wide by 326 Feet Long roller rink! That was huge!
One of the most interesting about this rink was that they had "horse racing" which is a barrel made into horses and skaters would sit on it and they would be pushed around using their skates as wheels for them to ride on the rink. They took that concept from another rink called Moon - Glo Rink.
Back in the Mid-Century, toy horses were popular.. the rocky one at home you may recalled riding or the mechanical one just outside of the drug store or the grocery store. Horses were popular thanks to popular Westerns television programs and motion pictures. This is might be why they did this. This is forerunner to other kind of toys such as Hot Wheels (no relations toy model cars. Big Wheels, and other wheeled toy vehicles.
About the lease according to the Billboard article by the time it was written in April 1945, apparently Land O' Dance Roller Rink was already operating for a time. Perhaps already logged 20 years which makes the rink goes back to 1925.
Note, do not confuse with Skateland Canton which is still operational in state of Illinois.
