Laces was a rather large skating rink in New Hyde Park in Long Island. Sort of the very middle of Long Island. It was a franchise along with another Laces Roller Skating Rink which was in Northport, NY by the sea. There is a Facebook page in memory of Laces before Laces became an ice rink in 1993.
When it was open is a question to ask and why the switch over to ice rink in 1993 is also a question to ask.
From reading in Facebook and yahoo questions forums both explained that many skaters also went to Empire Roller Rink and the Roxy. It was possible that some wanted to go to one rink then to the other. But with Laces shut down early in 1993, others went to Empire and Roxy before ending up with the last one- Empire in Greater New York City area that is not a dual functioning rinks (in winter, as ice rink while warm seasons as roller rink). Laces was just only ONE, not a dual rink.
Laces appeared to be two stories according to old 1980's photographs that were not clear. But it was not. I got informaiton on 04 March 2022 that it was just single floor. The photo showed it does look like another floor but it was extremely high ceiling. It was only 1 floor. The pictures that appear from a top floor or somewhere higher than the rink are from around the rink which was slightly raised or the elevated DJ booth. It was on a platform in the center of the rink, maybe 10ft above. (Source: CP). It appeared that there was double parallel rails surrounding the center of the rink. Appeared to be gold colored. The upper level appears to be where non-skaters or skaters with skates on can climb stairs to watch skaters below. I am not sure. More information is needed. However, by seeing current business at the old Laces as an ice rink, there is no secondary floor to watch skaters.
It appears the owner saw the slow death of roller skating in 1990s everywhere, the owner was smart to switch to ice rink in order to survive. From reading forums on Iceland, it was rather poor management according to Yelp. However, it was very updated and bright in as Iceland than it was with Laces according to the old grainy photographs showing the roller rink at Laces. It appeared more like a night club at Laces.
The graphics on the wall looks very patriotic as in in 1970s theme resembled closely to the American Bicentennial Celebration of 1976.
