L & R Skating Rink, North Hwy. 63, Houston, MO 65483
There is not a whole lot of information regarding to L & R Skating Rink that was in Houston, Missouri. You may wonder what the L & R stands for. It was named after the couple's first names. Lonnie and Roxie McGowen. They owned it for ten years in the 1980s. Specific dates are unknown. But they had several other venues they owned and work according to Lonnie's Obituary.
Unfortunately, I do not have a whole lot to go on. I could not find the specific street address. This coming from the list of rinks in 1990s that I have. But apparently the couple owned it from 1980s to 1990s. Likely 1984 to 1994 according to Houston Herald newspapers because of the announcements and advertisements. I could not get full access due to you have to pay to open those archives.
I could say there were a few potential candidates of where the rink used to be but I will not name specific where. Their Highway 63 is their main street in town. It is their boulevard with all the stores and businesses. Since he owned L & R Mobile Homes Sales. Likely that the trailer park is located just off of 63 and this certain building next door has the right size to be a roller rink. I am not positive but educated guess it was because of the position of the front door is at a corner. Most rinks have doors at the corner at a warehouse style buildings.
If that is true, then that is where it was.. there is a flea market located at that spot now. It also has plenty of parking. To me, it is clear it has to be because it is right next to the trailer park. Sometimes, you got to use Google Map and make a guess.
