Joyland of Woonsocket, 348 Cumberland Hill Road, Woonsocket, RI
Joyland of Woonsocket was a rink during the mid-Century in a town called Woonsocket, Rhode Island. It was a small rink. Similar to the one that was called Georgiaville Skateland. Well, it was small and simple rink. Not much I can explain about the architecture part that this site is really about, not the business. The building.
It was brown wood panel interior walls with wood floor. Likely Maple. It was small and has Gable roof. The name Joyland was quite unusual for a skating rink. But I understood the concept of why it is called Joyland. You are having fun skating! Full of Joy! That is the whole point.
Joyland was first opened in 1946 and the building burned down around 1973 or 1974. After the fire, it became a Chinese restaurant according to Google Map by using the address provided.
I compared the Google Map of the location to compare to the photograph taken from mid-century which was not a very clear picture because it did not focus on the rink. It was to show the area from a distance. I painstaking compared the two. There was no Newland Ave street connecting to Cumberland Hill Road. It had a Gable roofed house facing Cumberland Hill Road but according to the Google Map, that house is gone. It is now Newland Ave. The rink was where the Chinese take out is currently sits. If you look at the photo found on Forgotten Roller Rinks of the Past, it is not clear but you can see the arrow. But also look at other buildings surrounding front of the rink. That huge tan colored building is gone. Just a couple of houses built directly cross the street on Cumberland. It is a treatment center there now.
You can tell that photo was actually a black-n-white because you can see a section left totally natural black-n-white. It was colored in picture. I can tell because of everything so grey and several hues of grey found on that picture.
There are no red taillights on that picture. Looked photoshopped to me but it was not. It was old fashioned way of people photoshopping by painting in to color in old black-n-white photos. Its natural back then. But somethings like Wizard of Oz, never ever attempt color the black-n-white please! Its art! So, same with photos. Should have left it as natural. Its art.
Anyway, back to the rink. Not much I can tell about the architecture. It was built for a dance and skate club.
