Four B/W photos courtesy of Ken Steinhoff (the blogger). Originally, the thought those were taken at Hanover but it was not. It was Jackson according to posters who corrected him. Beautifully taken pictures! One of best I have seen in ages. The balance of the photos, the good black and white film and camera enough to capture skaters. My, a short boy interesting in a tall older girl? Watch out, Stifler! This clearly was taken at skate counter. I noticed her bag on the counter about to leave the rink... and another bag under the counter. Must be another female staff's purse.
Photos courtesy of Ken Steinhoff (the blogger). the demolish of the rink building but they kept the flea market building up. The building might be now owned by that storage company. Does that reminds you of Empire Rollerdrome in Brooklyn?
Google Map taken in 2015.
Jackson Roller Rink, Jackson Highway 61, Jackson, MO.
Roll-O-Fun Roller Rink, Jackson Highway 61, Jackson, MO.
This skating rink was was erected in 1950 by Fred W. Wilferth and his father-in-law, Elmer Seabaugh and named the rink as Jackson Roller Rink because of its appropriate location. According to a 1998 article in Southeast Missourian newspaper article online (actual pint), it said the address was on Highway 34. I could not locate any of the roads on Google Map. Where it was located? However, based on a photo of the highway in the blogger's article, I took a good guess and found it! On first try to find on street level! It was opened in 1952.
It was a cute rink with just 110 by 50 feet Maple wood lay on the rink. It was built after August 1950 and operated as Jackson Roller Rink. Well, the owner, Fred was a school principal who loved kids who started the rink with his father-in-law because he wanted children to have a place to do something rather than out to do trouble. He was one of true loving man as it sounded like from those who posted their comments including his grandson in a blogger's article about Jackson "Roll-O-Fun" Rink.
This is why he started the rink in 1960 but for some reason we do not know why he sold the rink so soon in 1954 to Woodrow “Woody” and Jean Seabaugh who ran until 1983. But it was in 1960, Woody renamed the rink as "Roll-O-Fun" But perhaps a historian in heart, Cliff Wilson, renamed it back to Jackson Skate Center so that it is properly named that. People like to keep original name if a place renamed something else. Like a shopping mall near me, I kept saying the original name and say that name rather than that new name.
The rink building was a very simple white building, looks small building, it had two parts. One for the rink which was on left side and the right, it was built later to house a cafe. The addition was built in 1960. The Seabaughs bought it as they were afraid it would have been turned into something else. They wanted to preserve it. This is why I wanted to buy Sports-O-Rama in Mattydale, NY for same reason.
The original building built in 1952 had gable roof concrete block walls built roller rink. The addition was a flat roof concrete block building. A bit of mis-match for the complex. It was meant to be that way because the addition was made for a lunch counter, game room including mini-bowling lanes (6 lanes). It was meant to be an expansion into an entertainment center.
I only have exterior photos but not interior. Unfortunately. But I have other rinks in the area's interior. Why this one was excluded and it ran for many years!
The rink had bands, likely local bands played there. Apparently they had bands which was a rare feast because many rinks were organ music at the time.
Cliff Wilson bought it in 1983 but it did not say when it was closed for good. There are no article by this blogger when the rink stopped operating. Eventually Cliff may have sold it in 1990s because of the downturn of skating rinks and it became a sign shop and a flea market. Two separate entries.
The newspaper article explained about the rink was featured in 1998. The rink may have closed in end of 1990s or early 2000s.
Eventually, the sign shop moved out, closed for good, or whatever. That part they demolished the former rink but the flea market part is still up but the sign is much faded on Google Map taken in 2015, the most updated on there.
When you see the interior black and white photos like you seen on top of page, you are seeing actually taken at Jackson Skating Rink because the blogger made a mistake about location. It was not Hanover as he thought. See here.
