The Skate Place located at 1143 Front Avenue. South West, New Philadelphia, Ohio. It was also called J-R Associates. I do not understand why it was listed on the rink lists from 1990s. As of July 25, 2021, the rink is listed as SALE PENDING. This means it is already "sold"-- someone made an offer for the 698,900 USD for the rink and building. That was the sale price found on Howard Hanna real estate website. The same goes with Xome.
Google said it is permanently closed. Facebook confirmed it on October 14, 2020, in the midst of COVID Depression.
On the page you saw all the list including those two names are in purple which means operational and for sale. It will be changed when it is sold and we are prayfully they do not have to be listed as a Dead Rink! If the new owners are going to keep it operational, this profile will stay on as PAST rink. Many profiles you saw on Dead-Rinks were PAST rinks incarnations. And some are operational with new revamped appearance brought back into operational.
This rink opened in 1974 after it was built.
It was okay for teens to walk or ride a bike to the rink on a score of 45.
The name, J - R Associates has to be the owners' name for the rink. Businesses like to do that part as a DBA (Do Business As). J - R as in Jeanie and Ronald. Jeanie and Ronald Sherrets owned and operated the rinks since 1977. After his wife passed away, Ronald kept the rink operating till 2020.
The Interior.
The skating floor is a 70 Feet x 140 Feet Non-painted Polyurethane coated Maple with Narrow Fan layout for the skating floor. It has Pink Red Bricks for half-walls around the rink. They also have a lot of tables and benches for eating area and has two billiard tables. It was very modest rink interior design. Simple but has flair to it because of the walls were full of long stripes and curls or whirls. Very 1970s graphics if you want to say that and yes, it was. This rink was truly classic. In fact, the paints looks good on the wall which must be painted over the original paints and lines to keep it fresh. Maybe new colors but this is what it does look like to me. I am not sure what it was like when it was first opened in 1977. Anyone? Any differences? Those whirls are similar to the popular style of the 1970s especially if you recalled Billy Batson and Mentor in SHAZAM! Saturday morning rode in a motorhome going around the country in a 1973 Open Road Motorhome. Arctic Cat Enterprises (check the bottom of the page) had similar logo but with the A and even Ariens also had that look. (all are clickable to see what they look like). Even for residential homes had them as seen here.
Groovy, was it? Yeah! (making a Disco movement similar to John Travolta.)
Some of the graphics, however were all straight and different style of lines as you can see on the main side wall on the rink. See Photo above and you will see it was really a big departure from the groovy curvys look.
That is how I feel about this place. I wish I could bought it but I do not have the money. This could have been on going as a rink and a rink museum.
One thing, I believe I can see a model train hanging from the ceiling above the eating area. Interesting. Wish they could have installed a real monorail like E. W. Edwards department store did before 1970s in Syracuse, NY and I am sure other department stores back the day had those monorails. Side note, E.W. Edwards had a Louden Monorail. One can dream.
The Exterior.
It has that 1970s feel to the building. Cinderblocks walls, Shingles Mansard style roof canopy where the front door is.. See photo. Truly Contemporary style of the 1970s mix with a little minimalist to it. Groovin!
