Courtesy of Google Map. The exterior as Middletown Roller Skating Rink.
Courtesy of Middletown Roller Skating Rink. The new floor as the website says. I do not see the Dark Blue strip around the rink. The way it is shining making it does look like Concrete. Is it? The walls appeared to be there for long time. Even the scratch mark on the left corner side of walls. Zoom if you can.
Holiday Skating Rink 547 Main Street, Middletown, CT
Middletown Roller Skating Rink 547 Main Street, Middletown, CT (CURRENT OPERATING)
Middletown Roller Skating Rink 547 Main Street, Middletown, CT (CURRENT OPERATING)
Currently Middletown Roller Skating Rink at 547 Main Street, Middletown, Connecticut is operational but you know that it was once called Holiday Skating Rink from 1948 till the current owner Maria Paquette who is a Physical Education Teacher with a Masters Degree in Recreation purchased the age old beloved rink, Holiday into Middletown Roller Skating Rink in 2002.
The skating rink is part of the Professional Building that is seen from the front but everyone thinks the rink is separated and hidden. Yes and no. Yes, it is behind the 2 storys building and yes it is hidden but it is not separated. It is joined. The Professional building was once a Scotch Evangelical Union Church that the rink section was perhaps where the sanctuary was. A place where people come in and hear the sermons.
With her excellent experience in physical education and Masters in recreation, this assist Maria to make her current rink running well for 20 years.
Holiday Skating Rink ran for more than 50 years. It was dissolved on April 4th, 2002 according to Bizapedia. This tells us that Maria purchased it in March or during first week of April, 2002.
Joann Milazzo operated the Holiday Skating Rink at the time but I am sure other owners came and went between 1948 and 2002 though.
I do not have much information though.
One interesting to note that the rink itself was sort of hidden behind the Professional Building downtown Middletown, Connecticut. It is quite interesting location to hide the rink from that building and right next door to the left of professional Building is the fire department. Apparently hiding really seem to work for both Holiday and Middletown Roller Rink considering locals knew where the rink was. Not main street signs. Nothing but a true classic neon sign is up on the roof of the rink and a more updated sign with the current rink name is on. Very basic. It has very basic appearance and it works for well. Now, behind that rink is the cemetery. This is the rink I need to check out because of unique location and its simplify in a city setting. Not countryside. I recommend you skaters to check out Middletown Roller SkatingRink.
Please click link so you can see what the rink is all about and their schedule (as this time of writing-November 28, 2019, they are not open due to COVID mess and lockdown. Wait till they will reopen, you can wait and watch for that on their Facebook business page.
The Interior.
Since they first opened in 1958, I do not know what the appearance was like for the interior but the more recent times you can tell a very 1970s look presently. A retro because of the popular 1970s colors of Orange and Brown and a Pale Yellow above those two colors.. You remembered those colors. If that was done in 1970s, that is the look ever since they had. No kidding. they have some Disney Characters on the wall as a mural. It features Mickey and Donald. It does not look a good match between the murals and the 1970s colors but it works well for them.
It featured once popular Starburst lights with Diamond Ball (Mirrored Ball) on the ceiling. The ceiling I can see looks very age old style panel with out the aluminum grid up and they also have light tubes.
The eating area ceiling looks very different than the rink floor. I see the style is very much like I saw at a school and some office buildings. They are very unusual for a rink. Rinks today are now using exposed ceilings to reflex their appearance from age old look before 1970s to 1990s ceiling panel look.
I was looking at photos on their Facebook page, that is what caught my eye about very different style ceiling. It does show it is old. Hey, the rink was around since 1948.
I love that big wall window near the door. It really lights up the eating area. They have that popular round table in Yellow and of course picnic table in matching color. The carpet looks new. It is like Carpetiles but it is larger and were cut in different setting or size. This is first I ever seen they lay like that out of all 1900 plus rinks I have worked on AND STILL operational rinks including Middletown Roller Skating Rink. This makes more unique and I love this old school rink mix with newness that function well. I am sure skaters felt the same when they are skating there.
Recently roller floor that is Sky Blue Painted with Dark Blue thick strip around the Rink near the edge of course, it is a roller court floor. While Roller Court may be excellent for some Rinks, Skaters really do not like them as I read on this rink's comments in Google, etc. Also at other places that the floor is bit hard to skate with. I saw photos and I am concern about the floor, it is not flatly tight to the ground floor and it can pose danger to falling. A few comments said that if you fall, the owner will yell at you and even kick you out! Huh!? Owners, please BE NICE! You want customers? It starts with your own attitude. Yes, that is correct, A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E. Ask business experts, they will tell you you need to be nice to customers. You are there to represent the customers, not your rinks. You own rinks yes, or manage them, but you have to be in your customers' shoes or rather, skates to understand how customers feel. Are you?
I did see the Roller Court needs to be flatten, and fix up the walls and baseboards and paint. There is an outlet that has no covering! It is a health code violation that needs to be covered! A lawsuit can happen. I am sure that person who complained has reported to BBB and health department to inspect. I sure hope they did.
There are many complaints about mildew and mold. Molds are dangerous and can cause illnesses or even fatal. Mildrew is not good either. (Why you think shopping malls removed water fountains and even life pants out of the malls for? They caused mildew and not adding that blue chemicals that can stop the small). So, having said considering this place is old, I believe it needs to be total renovated by ripping out walls, floor, etc and rebuilt. And fix the exterior as well. Both Google and Yelp for this current rink has same echo on what needs to be done.
It is still cash only admission and in fact, the black stoppers are not allowed because it would "ruin Roller Court" with "black streaks" on Blue court. If the owner uses 3 or more thickness of Polyurethane coat to cover the Roller Court, then it is ok to use black stoppers. I have black stoppers on mine too!
But the building, the looks is truly old school which I love. Just needs to be fixed up completely though. Architecturally, I give it 7 out 10 stars and the functionally or care of the place is maybe 2 out 10 thanks to the photos by skaters on both Yelp and Google.
I love that old school exposed iron pipes going this way or that way. I recalled I went to a school as a kid that one building they preserved has that same look. Same color too, Pale Yellow OR Ivory with exposed beam, and the similar ceiling. That part of the school I was in was built in 1935 and still standing along connecting to 1970 built Modern campus.
One thing though, the website said they have a new floor. It looks shining and no Dark Blue. Did they replace with another Roller Court OR replace with Concrete? I pray it is Concrete but must keep it coated every few years.
The Exterior.
As I said hidden away, you can see very rudimental basic look of a rink. With Neon light sign flashing saying "Middletown Roller Skating" which is bit hard to see from the road. And a basic sign. It is painted White. Very functional with basic. The walls are Bricks. Likely Red Bricks but painted with White. There is a slight upramp into parking lot for the rink which is exposing tall Concrete walls.
