Hilltop Rink "Highway 60", Moravia, IA
This rink was in Moravia, and it was really located between that city and Albia. Half way each way but I could not find where it would have been. Although it was opened on Sunday July 2, 1950 in time for Fourth of July week vacation for area Iowans.
I have no idea where exactly the rink was because of the highway they listed on their ads showed a name of the highway that is found on the other side of Iowa. Not near. Far. It is said to be in between Moravia and Albia. I could not pinpoint and Google Map did not do street mapping from their official map vehicle.
I have no photos to show what it was like. I see quite a bit of ads in area newspapers and yearbooks in Moravia. Unfortunately I could not go on much. I have no date of closure and why they went out of business.
Only other major clue was a young man who passed away in 2007 married his sweetheart at this very rink on May 14, 1983. He must have met her at the rink. Sgt. William Gale Woollums, thank you for defending the Constitution of the United States and I want to add, thank you for defending our Faith in the LORD Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. And our lives from fires.
This gave me idea that this rink ran long time for more than 33 years. It must have closed during the 1980s when roller skating faced a downturn. Anyone know how long?
LeRoy Dicks Brown when he retired, he purchased the rink in 1978. LeRoy passed away in 2015. So, it was between 1983 and 2015. It is all guessing game.
UPDATE --
I received an email with further explanation on 10 June 2021. Here is what she has to say. You can figure it out who she is related to.
Hello, I was wondering if I can help you with more information about the Hilltop Skating Rink in Iowa.
I am one of the daughters of William Gale Woollums.
The reason you can not locate the building, it was tore down in the late 90s early 2000s due to a roof caving in. It was located on what is known has old Hwy 5. Very small off road that attaches to Hwy 5. Between Albia and Moravia. It is much closer to Moravia but was consider Monroe County. This is where Google maps gets confused. Albia is a part of Monroe County. If you are not a local you would miss it to be honest.
Currently a home is sitting on the land. Very nice cabin with a green roof. The home sets a little ways back from the road.
You are correct [that] Mr. Woollums did marry his sweetheart at the rink. My mother Jenny. Because this is where they meet.
Her parents owned the rink in the late 70s and early 80s. They were known as the Whites. Robert and Phyllis.
Phyllis ended up selling the rink [in] late 83 / early 84, due to the unexpected death of Robert.
I had the chance to skate at the rink once before the closure. It looked like a old poll building with metal siding and wooden floors. It was definitely a time capsule of the 70s and 80s.
Hope this helps with your blog. Have a great day.
