Highland Heights Roller Rink 4 Woodbine Street, Taunton, MA
Highland Heights Roller Rink was located at 4 Woodbine Street in Taunton, Massachusetts. This rink was pretty much hidden in a cute simple neighborhood that appeared to hide behind a house. Skaters would know where this was when it was operational from 1951 on for 40 years.
Lenny and Christine Rose established the rink in 1951.
It closed in 1991 after just being in business for 30 years. The rink building sat pretty long abandoned and empty that it was falling apart. Ball park when it was closed. Between 1991 and 1993 according to Matthew.
One thing to know if you were looking in Facebook, the photo in this Vintage Roller Skating has an error: the Black-and-White postcard showed was NOT the Highlands Heights Roller Rink. It was a different rink in the same town. It was simply called The Rink. Please remember there is a huge difference. I have done my research and can tell the difference between HHRR and the Rink from the postcard. You can tell with the pitch for the roof and this one was steeper than HHRR. Plus the side walls were taller than HHRR. VRS made that huge mistake! Dead-Rinks explained on there their mistake.
The rink establish dates brought a conflict. The photo and a certain source told that it was 1951 but business databases (3 of them) shown it was established in 1992! What was it really? Did it return back to business that year or what?
The abandoned building was torn down in 2018 to make way for 10 new houses along that property. There is a huge group of photographs seen at this site! Check them out at Highlands Heights Roller Rink.
Now, this makes more sense if you read below. The rink operated twice! First time it was operated from 1951 to 1981 then it sat abandoned until 1992 and closed in around 2004. Then it was torn down in 2018.
UPDATE! -- 13 April 2022.
I got an email from a Matthew. He said this in his email --
I was on your site and was reading about the old Highland Heights Roller Rink in Taunton Ma. I can't speak to the exact year when it closed ..and yet I do know this ..I was at that rink between 1991-93.. And at that time it was obviously very old, rundown, and long past it's glory days.. There was no DJ, music was provided by the radio and was played over a blown loud speaker. As a matter of fact the radio station being played that night was the old KIX 106.3 ( now known as Hot 106.3 ) out of Rhode Island. It was then and still is a R&B/ Hip Hop station. There was a decent crowd of [people] skating, mostly a younger crowd with a few die hard old timers that just loved to skate .. Just my 2 cents I was reading that there is some confusion as to when the rink closed . One thing is for sure that rink was still open in the early 1990's.
UPDATE! -- 16 August 2022.
I received an email describing the rink being opened till at least 2004! Yes, more recent times! Here is what she has to say--
I was just reading about Highland Heights Roller Rink in Taunton, MA. The website mentions the rink closing in the early 90s. I skated at that rink through 2003-2004. We went to the rink Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. They occasionally had birthday parties there after our skate session was over on Saturdays.
Erin.
Thanks Erin! Now that helps! Really helps!

The Exterior.
This building was pretty odd shaped that the roof was not quite Gable. Each pitch was different on each part. No, it was not an M-Shaped roofline. It was rather not quite Butterfly either. I have to classified this as Mixed because it was not standard roofline. Parts of the wall were wood shingles especially on upper part. It appeared to be wood built entirely.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
