Hap Allen's Skateland or known as just Skateland which was on 6 mile Richardson Highway, Fairbanks, Alaska. So was the Farthest North Roller Rink.
The rink also was owned by Ralph A. Miller.
The address says 6 Mile Richardson Highway and Google Map does not display anything with that name of highway. Just Richardson Highway or Old Richardson Highway. Might been an old name of a highway road back then. It may have been renamed or removed from the earth forever.
This information I received from D. M. in her email regarding this rink. I attempted to find information online which was fruitless. I do not know why but only found the ad and about the fire.
This is what D.M. told me in her email --
May 1960 - Grand opening Skateland, 6 mile Richardson Highway, Fairbanks, Alaska.
1960, 1961, 1962 - Hap Allen's Skateland operated at 6 mile Richardson Highway
June 1961 Skateland - closed due to flood. [May had flood damages and repaired immediately].
July 1963 - Army Spec. S. Kenneth H. Schloman, using a 1917 30.06 rifle, killed three people: O. C. "Shorty" Howard who was a taxi cab driver at Skateland, George Walker Stockton who was a tourist and motel manager Thalis O Lenord at nearby El Rancho Motel; others injured at Skateland including Frederika Gay and Ralph Miller who lost his arm; also injured others at El Rancho Motel. (Sounded like a mass shooting at two places-- Skateland and El Rancho Motel. An Army Officer … PTSD?) Anyone know more about this shooting, any articles?
31 Dec 1963 - Skateland hosts New Year's Ball.
31 Oct 1964 - Ralph and Diane Miller [returned] and Skateland opened for Halloween Costume Party.
21 Feb 1965 - Skateland destroyed by fire; owned by Ralph Miller, valued at around 57,000 [USD], mostly covered by insurance; fire discovered by 12-year old Marjorie Miller but it took 20 minutes before fire department on Ft. Wainwright was alerted.
Farthest North Roller Rink may also have been housed on the same property and it became an ice rink. Again, exact location of the rink is unknown. I got 2 current ice rinks that are not on Richardson Highway. But both have baseball, Little League fields, tracks, and football fields.
The label for Farthest North Roller Rink appeared to be 1950s.. maybe 40s. Was this the rink before it became Skateland? Good question. Anyone know about this? Reason I said that because of the fire destroyed the rink in 1965 which ended that rink. Roller rink then ice then back to roller rink then burned down? Someone on Ebay said about the history. But I need confirmations from skaters, or newspapers. I could not see any.
