All above courtesy of Google Map. Noticed the evolution of appearance. And names. Ouch, someone must have T-boned that car that was abandoned on the parking lot that day the Google mapper drove by. That is the second accident on the spot. First the car crashed into the doors and this one. Just drive carefully in that area!
4 photos above courtesy of Skater Zone. Those were taken yesterday (on May 15, 2020). It appears to be very clean, nicely done interior. And it is cleaned from COVID since you can see the masks on the workers. Not skaters at all.

Great Eskate Family Skate Center and Roller Kingdom were rinks names and business before it was sold to Fun Wheels before Skater Zone, the current operating roller rink on 2606 Calhoun Road in Rome, GA. Ah, another Rome! Roma, Italia, Rome, NY, and this Rome, Georgia! Pretty neat!
Those name changing happened quite a bit. I only found in yellow pages online, Loop Net, and other commercial real estate. It is not giving any other histories or their old websites (most of the time, they are offline for good and usually not archived. Then there the current one, Skater Zone.
Anyone know about those former rinks' history, dates of openings, closing, photographs, everything. I got the Skate Zone, thank you.
Before I go further, really touched my heart about they had fund raising for a teenager or young lady who has cancer, I believe (looking up her profile on Facebook). Skate Zone had a fund raising for Jewell. A beautiful young blond hair lady with full of smiles and still smiling. Going through Chemotherapy. In the midst of COVID-19 pandemic as we speak. They had a fund raising night in February 2020. Check out #4Jewell. I am not sure if that is twitter. But.. for those without it, check with Skater Zone and they can direct your financial support. You can also check with Mission Is Possible (Not the movies, not the TV series, thank you, it is a charity organization). Click on Mission Is Possible. You can donate and read more about her. I pray she recovers well in Jesus' Name!
Jewell, congratulations on your Cheerleading Championship! Get well, Jewell! And when you get better, you can go skating once again! Keep in healthy and stay safe! God bless you, Jewell! This page is dedicated to you, Jewell and you too, Skater Zone for your effort in charities. Her real name is June. Still, beautiful name!
OK, back to the rink histories. Hmm, how can I find more information about the old ones. All I know the building and property was sold in 2008. Making that Skate Zone was in business since that year. Perhaps.
IN 2016, a lady drove her Toyota as she was backing up instead, she crashed into the glass front doors of the rink, and no other damages to the building. And the rink was opened as usual that night. Must be they fixed it real quick.
I have no idea which rinks are in order but I can tell you that the current one is Skater Zone, the previous one was Roller Kingdom. Thanks to Google Map. But for the other two, I have no idea. Apparently the building been around for long time. I can tell by the look of the building.
Last it was sold on October 30, 2008 for the cost of 570,000 USD. Not bad price back the day during the Great Recession. This effectively ended Roller KIngdom. Skate Zone owners purchased that day.
Originally that land before the rink was built in 1977, it was Dellinger Farms. Farm land.
The Interior.
I have no idea what those former rinks' looks were like but I can tell you one thing, the rink floor is Maple. That is all I know because usually each owner of a skating rink that buys the previous one do remodel because they include the remodel budget with the purchase mortgage loan. Always ask for more, potential owners because when you buy a rink, you have extra budget from the mortgage loan and you can remodel, get new skates, etc.
This rink is one of rarest. They have parquet wood floor layout. What I see in photos, the floor appeared to be well maintained with thick Polyurethane clear coat. It is a beautiful floor there. Maple? Perhaps.
I do not know what the looks for rest of the place before Skater Zone. However, I will describe Skater Zone's current look. They have that popular black light colors against Black carpet and they have very standard colors on walls such as Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Purple, etc. Very basic. Yet, it does appear very attractive modern look. What I mean is that they are very updated. This rink I would recommend many to go skating for sure. Very kind to charities, modern, and clean. It has that Starburst lights and the Diamond ball up there... classics are kept as well.
The floor total 21,500 Square Feet. It was built in 1977. LIkely Great Eskate was the one that was opened that year.
Likely the interior was the same for both Fun Wheels and Skate Zone.
The Exterior.
Since I do not have the look of oldest one--Great Estake so I have no idea. But Roller Kingdom had dark bold color of Deep Red with Neon Green... it is a Gable Free Span Steel Truss Steel Walled Warehouse-like Building. When it was sold, they painted with Light Gray and kept the Neon Green on the building such as the canopy. The 2016 mishap with the car ending up going reverse crashing into the glass doors was only time it was damaged and replaced. Google Map can tell you the changes on doors.
Can you spot them?
Now as Skater Zone, they kept the exterior intact. Just change the sign. Roller Kingdom had much larger sign. Now Fun Wheels had it smaller sign. And bit harder to see from the road. Although they had cute mascot. Skate Zone modernized it and made it more bold logo which makes it easier to see.
