All photos except for top are courtesy of RE/MAX Integrity Grants Pass. Noticed the bottom showed the illegal art work. But still, pretty nice art work. Please do NOT attempt to do any art work in public place. Please do it in your own home!
Grants Pass Skate Center, 1270 Rogue River HWY., Grants Pass, OR
Grants Pass Skate Center was a rink in this town some time ago. I do not have a whole lot of information regarding the rink. It was housed in a Gable roof cinder block building with a large wood floor, urethane coated maple floor that was doubled as a skating rink and a gym floor with other activities such as dancing. It was more like a community center type of skating rink facility.
This building was built in 1946. The rink was opened in 1947. The former rink was put up for sale in November 05, 2004.
All I know the exterior was Brick Red front with awning and white upper half of the building while the sides were painted Faded Brick Red color on the most recent. The interior, the clear coated stained wood floor was perhaps coated with some kind of protection.
It looks very raw interior that it was painted White or primer on it without paint. Maybe fade on upper half of the walls interior white Fresh White on the bottom 8 feet of the walls.
The place was up for sale for a while and it became a store or storage because the name was not clear on the sign on Google Map. Now it has that for sale sign up by a reputation-able realtor as you will see the photos.
As of recent, some punk painted a very large 10 feet tall by maybe 20 feet wide graffiti on the side if you look at a certain angle on the Google Map but if you move, it disappears. Apparently that illegal art work was done after the rink was up for sale.
So, you can see the rink did not last long under this rink. Was there another one before that because usually skating rinks are near bowling alleys like with this one. Next door is the Quonset Hut style roof bowling alley called, Caveman Bowl.
After it was sold, it became an athletic center. Apparently now that athletic center folded. Current photos show the floor is need of repairs due to fade, stained out, and likely needs replacement due its age. 1946 is quite longer than the wood's lifetime of 50 years.
