Golden Sands Skateland 5427 Plover Springs Dr, Plover, WI
The address was 5427 Plover Springs Drive, Plover, Wisconsin. However, the map on Google was not exactly perfect. You would have to go to 2811 Plover Springs Drive, Plover, Wisconsin. That is where you can find on Google Map. See the photo of the current location where the Grill is now located. It is a bar/restaurant.
It was opened in 1977. Closure date is unknown. Anybody? Not even photos are known. Originally got the name from one of those old 90s websites listing of rinks in operational status. It is said to be closed in 1990s. The information I got from Manta was wrong. A skater fan informed me today on December 6, 2020.
Margaret Trickle owned the rink.
Manta says they were opened in 1991. Wrong, according to the fan, he said they were opened around 1977. The rink was likely closed in 1992 or 3 because of this article. This article is long and listed many couples how they met. You will have to click at Wausau Daily Herald and roll down about 3/4th way down. Look for this-- A skating rink romance. Kelly and Joe Meronk, Amherst (as told by Kelly).
The couple got married in 1992 at that rink but the rink closed afterwards because the couple still skating at another location when that article published in 2018.
UPDATE -- (16 May 2022).
I received a simple email from a Christine. Very interesting information and thank you, Christine! Here is what she has to say --
I skated there from 1978 - 1981 (during high school). On Fridays, it was skating from around 6:30pm to 9:30 and then around 10pm, you traded in your skates for some dancing (socks). Yes, for 2 hours the rink became a dance floor. Only socks (no shoes) allowed on the rink. This was during the disco years. Great memories.
Interesting about part time skating and part time dancing but just socks!? Haha. Oh man! I think I know why. The management was concerned that the females would have stilettos which could punched in the wood floor and it could cause grooves. Wood are expensive so doing this could do damages. But I doubt that can really do much damages. Really. Funny, now with this bar, they have darts.... it is worse than wearing shoes!
Thanks again, Christine!
The Interior.
It had Sky Blue Concrete skate floor with Berber Carpet with Red color as shown in a photo. It had low ceiling with white panels on it and colorful light tubes in ceiling lights. It does look low ceiling.
One wall showed it has dark Rustic with Dark Brown or Black carpet with 2 movie screens for music video or announcements. This one I see in photo showed very much in second half of 1970s as it appeared to be new and opened. Having screen at a rink in 1970s was shocking to me. Many did not do that till 1980s. Were they the first? Who knows.
The next Photo showed they were in 1970s after all because of the children wearing really short shorts similar to old NBA players at the time would wear before baggy knee length shorts.
They also had globe lights pendants on the ceiling as well. This really showed it was in late 1970s. See what I mean here.
They had rustic looking exposed wood beam spanning cross the rink. They also had pinball games and I noticed no video games or arcade games yet. Again 1970s. Again see that link I had in past paragraph.
This one photo I felt bit pretty spooky. Since those photos has people, I prefer to focus on rinks without people for viewers here to see the rink itself, not people. Well, this one if you click here, you will see it is bit spooky if you see on the left side of the photo. it is too much of a glow to be a person skating on that side and no way lights in that rink would shine like that because I seen like a dozen photos or more already without any aura like ghost as this one here.
Should I call Upstate NY Truth Hunters to do this one as paranormal investigation? Haha. Hey Jay and Steve and Dave, wanna join me to see if it is haunted? Hahhahaa.
The floor looks concrete at the time but it is wood. Was painted in Sky Blue. Then the wedding venue which is also gone for a time before the bar and grill restaurant. The wedding venue had White or Light Gray Floor painted. Now it is all stained wood floor. See photos.
