Gaston Skating Rink "100 block of E Elm St," Gaston, Indiana. I just received an email about this rink as I was working on rinks from many emails plus my main focus is now on Pennsylvania and I was going to do a list from Indiana. but here we go.. a lot of information.
The address I put down as what I got in the email. However, Google Map states the parking lot as B.R. said in her email (read below), it was "100 WEST Elm Street" NOT "100 EAST Elm Street). The gas station on the East side.
She said parking lot, so I had to put down Washington Street and I click the North Washington and yes, I got the corner. it is the SOUTHWEST of NORTH Washington and EAST Elm Streets. Big parking lot with the water tower behind. I place this as 199 EAST Elm Street.
Here is what the email described.
There used to be a skating rink in Gaston, Indiana located at the corner of Elm and Washington street. I’m unable to find an address, everything just states “The 100 block of E Elm St.”
It was originally Myers Garage. The showroom was eventually turned into the Myers Roller Rink in 1939. It became Dunnigans Roller Rink in 1972. As far as I can find it was just called Gaston Skating Rink when Dunnigans bought it. The rink met its demise in 2007 after the roof collapsed from the weight of a heavy snow. The entire building was demolished and now sits as an empty lot.
Thank you!
The Interior.
It was a former garage. It was converted to a roller rink. I am sure the original appearance inside for the rink was to show exposed Segmental Arch Wood Trusses. Then they covered it up decades later.
The Exterior.
Based on those B/W photos, it was Cinderblocked walled garage-like or storage warehouse like building. Free-Span with Segmental Arch roof.
