Fun Spot Arena 525 Earlwood Ave, Oregon, OH
Fun Spot Arena was a rink in an Quonset Hut on 525 Earlwood Ave in Oregon, OH. It was one of the most unique because of its design.
But before that, it was Pearson Park Roller Rink and it was an outdoor rink during warm seasons as it became an ice rink during winter time. Next to it were four courts. I could not make out what court they were. Basketball? Tennis?
It was opened in 1960 and closed in 2012 when the International Boxing Club (IBC) purchased it for their boxing events or practice but it was short lived and was sold. In 2015, the Toledo Sport and Social Club (TSSC) purchased the building from the IBC for a variety of co-ed recreational activities for adults for the last six years. TSSC renamed the Skyway Recreation Center since January 2016. The skating rink ran for 52 years. All according to Toledo Parent online.
A person by the name of K. M. told me a bit about the rink in email --
This was a rink located in the suburbs of Toledo. Right off I-280 in Oregon, Ohio. Used to be a rink that people on that side of town would go to. I been skating over 20 years and I never went over there to skate. I was in a skate group and we were approached to bring back skating from the past owner to have skate nights. It didn't last long and the owner eventually sold the building. She told us a story that her dad was from California and he loved the floor (from California) that was over there (in California) and brought it over here (to Toledo). It was a concrete floor and it had cracked up so much. Over the years they tried to repair but it was too expensive.
What interesting is that the facility remains a sporting facility. Just the change of scenery from roller skating to boxing then into a recreational indoor sporting facility. They includes basketball, volleyball, kickball, tennis, indoor football, softball, the other football (soccer), cornhole, and more.
What a shocker, Realty Trac said the IBC sold the building to the current owner of Skyway for cheap price. A fire sale I would say. The cost was just 9,000 USD! Ah, DAD!!!!!!! Never mind, Dad. Too late. It was sold for that price and I would have it returned as roller rink. Oh well. It was sold on December 18, 2015.
The Interior.
A beautiful 20,336 Square Feet facility with Wood celling, colorful Truss that are painted in bright rainbow-like colors. The original floor was Concrete and later Maple if that is what the source was saying. Now a new floor and different floor uses such as basketball, volleyball, kickball, etc.
Originally as Pearson, they were outdoors. Larger than average size hockey rink size. With center not skating.
The Exterior.
It was truly an Quonset Hut style rink that it was built in mid-century. The walls above the main door areas as seen on Google Map showed it was Cloud Sky Blue with Metal Gray Blue walls.
Original had no building. All outdoors when it was Pearson Park Rink.
