Fugate's Skating Rink was part of a large business entertainment group, the Fugate's Entertainment, Inc. They had their rink not really at 80 Pilgrims Path but many things were addressed to that address. So do not go there if you want to check it out. It is at 198 Entertainment Drive, Hazard, KY. I am not sure if the building still stands and abandoned. But they also had about every entertainment segment you can think of including Bowling, movie theaters, water park, and more.
UPDATE! --
I received an email from a family member whose grandfather, Kidd Fugate was one of the few Fugates Brothers that started the entertainment center. Here is a couple of lines he has to say --
Kidd Fugate and his brothers started the entertainment center back in the 80's. Perry County Speedway was owned by part of the Fugate family but was not a part of the Fugate entertainment center.
As if you were there, the Entertainment Drive, which was named for their entertainment business, going north, you would see the old movie theaters (4 screen) on the left, and originally, they had the old showboat style bathhouse for their water park. on the right on the corner with Hull School Road, likely that was where the roller rink was. I believe their bowling center was up that way too.
Anyway, they closed just like they closed everything else. The rink has been demolished (Google Map top view).
Movie theaters closed in 2016. The showboat style water park building was burned down by arson.
Several websites pointed to 2001 as the year they registered and opened the rink. Is that correct, skaters?
Nope, it was 1980 according to Starla Bell who is related to the Fugate Family. Starla's father, Kidd Fugate, opened Fugate's Skating Center along with his two brothers in 1980. It was last owned by Douglas Fugate.
However Yellow Pages pointed out that they opened in 1948! Must be the entertainment business they first opened something else. Perhaps an umbrella business.
Only Yellow Pages verified that it is closed.
On December 16, 2013, there was a major fire that brought out 3 fire departments to contain the fire and saved a house directly behind the rink (see photo) and the rink and another business went too. It was 2 business there-- a photography studio and a floral shop.
It was a total loss.
In my opinion, the rink was burned down on purpose by arsonists because they did burn the showboat bathhouse in 2020. This area is perfect spot to hide to cause trouble. Same with abandoned amusement parks, trolley parks, etc because troublemakers can relief their anger or addiction to burn something. if you have thirst for burning buildings, please do yourself a favor, go seek for some professional help. I knew a boy my age when I was young and we worked the newspaper routes. He did one route on one street, I did the other closer to me. They found out who did it and they took the teenage boy to a mental hospital. This was in early 1980s. The house burned the next street over from where I lived where he was working his route. No one else knew except for him that the couple who lived in that house went away on vacation. It was easy to figure out by fire investigators and the police. I was told by those investigated the case.
The Interior.
The Floor was made out of concrete that was painted Orange
The Exterior.
Hard to see in poor Google Map photo from 2008, they do not have any newer ones and in fact, no updates from Google Map! Really need photos! And good ones. If that is true where it was, It was Cinderblock-Walled Free-Span Steel Truss Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Concrete, painted Orange. Floor Layout: Standard.
Building Size: N/A. Built: 1980. Demolished: Monday, 16 December 2013 by fire.
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Truss Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Gable.
Acres: N/A.
Operated: (Overall)-- 1980 to Monday 16 December 2013.
Reason for Closure: Fire destroyed and family decided not to rebuilt.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, why closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
