Gallatin Skate Center, 698 South Main Street, Gallatin, Missouri
I do not have the proper street. Sorry. Anyone remembered where this rink exactly was located? Much appreciated. I have a guess and you can see in the picture. It is possible at this location: 698 South Main Street because of the design of this old fashioned building. It has that classic dome roof without any windows on the building and there is just one door. In Google Map, there is NO business name, nothing and no cars parked there. None of that. This is pure speculation until I am being pointed out by one of you.
The rink was founded in 1964 by Edward Elbert and N.C. Bennett who were partners in the building of the roller rink. N.C. was the contractor, and it was built it in 1964. The two men operated for five years. N.C. Bennett's interest drifted from operating the rink so then Edward Elbert bought out Mr. Bennett's share. Mr. Elbert ran the roller rink until he passed away in 1975. After that, his wife Margaret Pauline ran it for the next two years.
If that was the case of this location on 698 South Main Street, the white building with Domed Roof, no windows. Presently, it is all White walls. No other features. It has been long since closed in the likely 1980s. It was leased to Carl and LaJoy Abbs who renovated the skating rink in 1977. The fate is unknown how long they were opened till because I do not have any information on closure. Only that I quote what Judy Elbert, the daughter-In-Law of the founder and owner of the rink said, Judy said. “They’ve been sitting for 25-30 years so they’re a little dusty. " (Daviess County Historical Society) which was written in 2017. That would mean somewhere between 1992 and 1987.
That was a long time ago and those skates are still up for sale! I am curious what about other stuff if they still have for sale. I do not see any comment section on that website or contact us. Hmm.. Anyone?
Likely Gallatin Skate Center was opened when the couple, the Abbs leased and renamed it. Later, it became a video store. Now Judy Elbert who owns the building is selling off the skates.
