Skateland West 1204 Lincoln Ave, Jacksonville, IL
Skateland West 1204 Lincoln Avenue, Jacksonville Illinois was operational until they closed in November 2020 due to the Great Virus Lockdown that hurt the business. It is still up for sale by October 2022, two years later! (This was written in October 2022). This was originally as Eight Wheeler Roller Rink!
Eight Wheeler Roller Rink began in 1973. Jim and Lucy Buck owned and operated Eight Wheeler Roller Rink.
But it was sold to the Skateland West owner on 01 April 2013 who also owned Skateland South (and maybe there were Skateland North and Skateland East as well?) Located at 1204 Lincoln Avenue and the most recent owners were operated by Megan Anderson and her mother Mindi Shirley-Smith.
Jim and Lucy Buck wanted to retire and this is why it was sold to the owners of Skateland West.
The scoring system for walking is 55 out of 100 and bike score is 45 out of 100. I think it should be the same. Let average it out. 2.5 out of 5 or say 50 out of 100 points. So, that is okay score. However, skaters are usually young and has no cars. Then that is somewhat a little difficult for the business to attract non-drivers. I looked on Google Map. It was a mix neighborhood of commercial (not retail) and residents. Appeared half and half for sure.
The property, which the listing shows sold for $220,000 in 2013 and for $151,500 in February 2021. What surprised me is that it was sold in February 2021! AFTER the rink was closed. Then why it was still listed? Was that just the rink business that is for sale? Property and business are TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT investments to do. If you want both, it would cost doubled. But someone else owns the property but the rink is up for sale I believe.
What so odd are that both rinks had their Facebook pages. Right? Only Eight Wheeler Roller Rink which came first at this location sold the rink and they still have their Facebook page as a "memorial" page. Nothing updated yet. However, for Skateland Plus, they are completely gone. No Facebook page. Nothing.
The Interior.
Eight Wheeler Roller Rink: I do not know the look of the 70s were but judging from photos of people at the rink which I do not want to display but I studied the photos and picture it in my mind. It was pretty much wood panel walls that were popular from 1950s to 1970s. Even the Trusses were covered with wood! It was steel trusses since I know that shape from seeing 4000 roller rinks and counting! What I saw is that they build with Steel Trusses and covered with wood. Wood trusses were popular especially in 1960s and 1970s for many places including churches, few rinks, and other ventures that had that style. I have been to at least 10 to 15 different establishments at the time that has or had or still have those Wood Trusses or Wood-Plated Trusses. (I will name a few that I recalled around Central NY or upstate NY. the Defunct Nowhere City Teen Night Club that was originally a church and now a big earth mover equipment dealer, Immaculate Conception Church, North Syracuse Baptist Church, Buckley Road Baptist, Believers Chapel, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and many more).
Skateland West: One of the most beautiful rink interior I ever seen. Very colorful walls with many colors. Each section of the wall which is divided up by the Trusses posts on each side of the rink which gives away excellent markers to divide the walls. This appearance was quite popular in 2010s with this look. I have worked on some rinks that are closed that has that look on those walls. The carpets matched to the walls with colors that are on the walls are also on the carpet.

Dead Rinks is now International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© because many former names have become new names at the same rinks that are still active and due to much confusion, We have decided that International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© fits better for all rinks including defunct, closed, inactive, rebooted, and rinks that are still active today. For short on this site, it is International Roller Skating Rinks History© Bear with us as we change the entire site page by page each day. Thank you for understanding.

Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former. Since we are rebooted to allow alive rinks, active rinks, we welcome those active rinks as well. It will be described.
