Edgewater Park Skating Rink State Route 29, Celina, OH. Watercolor postcard. Noticed the shoreline curved toward to the right outward from the structure? See the Google Map photo on bottom of the album section. Source: Susan A. Miller.
Edgewater Park Skating Rink State Route 29, Celina, OH. Old Black and White photo of the rink on the lake. Got be a great sight to see that. It was showing the rear of the building, NOT front! Google Map showed the exact location and you can see there is no front doors. Clearly this was the location. Source:
Edgewater Park Skating Rink State Route 29, Celina, OH. Present day location of the former rink. Totaled renovated and new roof from Gable and Bonnet to Segmental Arch and flat roofs. Source: Google Map, 2013.
Edgewater Park Skating Rink State Route 29, Celina, OH. The top view of the former rink. Good thing the sun positioned from East (they took it in the morning there). You can see the shadow of the arch. Another thing to note. the shorelines curved. That matched to the color postcard. Source: Google Map.
Edgewater Park Skating Rink State Route 29, Celina, OH
Edgewater Park Skating Rink State Route 29 (540 East Market Street), Celina, Ohio. It was part of a park! This was a park in Celina, Ohio. Some sources said it was Grand Lake, some said different names of towns but all pointed to Celina. Yes, Google Map pointed to the location at 540 East Market Street which is also State Route 29. It is on the lake. The structure is perhaps the last of the park from those days back then.
Edgewater Park was a lakeside park. Celina, Ohio is quite similar to Town of Salina in Onondaga County, Syracuse, NY. I resides in Town of Salina and in fact, about a mile from the lake on Northside of the lake. They said that James Watson Riley who was traveling through New York State to get the town plat lithographed, James Riley came across the town of Salina, which was Surrounded on the northern edge of Onondaga Lake next to Syracuse. James noticed the similarity between Salina and the newly founded settlement in Ohio, he named the new town Celina. The spelling was changed to avoid confusion at the post office, or so the story is told from past legends. Town of Salina IS part of the City of Syracuse AND part of Liverpool. Galeville is also part of Town of Salina. I resides in Galeville.
Anyway! Now you know the background. The article from the City of Celina, Ohio failed some things to add. Both Onondaga Lake Park is on the lake in Town of Salina which is similar to City of Celina which is on the edge of Grand Lake. So, now you know the location of this park and rink. Today, I see pretty much commercial structure by the edge of the lake. Unfortunately, it did not match to the beautiful Onondaga Lake Park. The location for two movies filmed there.
Anyway, back to the rink. The postcards I see it was Gable roof building but the Google Map showed it is Segmental Arch. It was total renovated. I sense it was that location because of the Route 29 and the position of the photograph pretty much matching to the Google Map. This is why I got result of possible location.
It had 50 cottages for rental for vacationers to enjoy the beach. Likely those cottages were East of the former rink. The park also had 6 concession games, penny arcade, and 3 amusement rides. A micro amusement park. It may have closed before 1955 because of the Billboard listed many amusement park and some have rinks and this one did not list a rink or the owner/manager did not send information to the magazine what they have. If this was true, then they folded before 1955. Apparently around since maybe 1900s, maybe before that.
The Interior.
N/A. Maple floor?
The Exterior.
Originally it was Gable with Bonnet Roof design with likely wood structure but I am sure after the rink closed, they totally renovated into Segmental Arch with Flat Roof design and enlarged with Concrete Walls and windows. A very modern building.
