This was taken in 2018, before renovation to become District Skate. Noticed the wall? Yes, the rink itself is NOT true standard oval (rectangular) shape. It is shaped more like a Y. Or well, hard to explain here. But you still have to skate in oval though.
All courtesy of District Skate Oak Flats/Mike Ford. Beautiful rink! I love the colors, the lights. Made good reflexion. and the unusual shape of the rink itself! Really tops! I love the different layout rather than just plain oval or rectangular shape. This shaped more like a Y of sort.

Oak Flats Roller Skating Rink and District Skate Oak Flats were at 137 Industrial Road, Oak Flats New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. This rink is closing within days of Mayswater Rink closing! And its the only roller skating rink on the South coast of NSW. Poor Skaters. Now that whole region there has no rink. More and more rinks are disappearing and making skaters cannot skate at any rinks anymore. Like Vermont and New Hampshire in the United States, they do not have rinks there anymore. Where those skaters go? Same in the south part of NSW. I really feel it for the skaters and the owners of the rink.
Up to 2018, the Fannings were owners of the Oak Flats Roller Skating Rink before Mike Ford along with Ray and Terri took over in May 2018 till its closure in May 2021.
The Interior.
Beautiful facility very unique. Very Industrial look. You walk in and it seemly narrow as you get in and down the ramp a bit then you are there at the entire place. Open vaulted or cathedral ceiling overhead with Steel Trusses overhead and supports. It is Steel rods and supports making a triangle if looking at one end on top or bottom. but it supports trusses. This gave very industrial look with fans on the wall for vents.
The floor is Concrete in which appeared to be Charcoal Gray. with a White color on the wall. When it was Oak Flats RSR, there was a huge skate with a small person skating. Very caricature style showing supersized skate with a small person on one end while on the sides were plants, galaxies, and stars. The new one seems to eliminate that.
The Exterior.
It is very basic. Before 2016, it was just plain Royal Blue and Snow White on the wall end facing the street and it has Tan color wall on the side. But in 2015 or 2016, they painted a huge sign ROLLERSKATING as one word cross the wall. There is a small simple sign that is a little hard to read because of background color and the font colors are too close to resemble. Remember use the color wheel, owners!
I like the word ROLLERSKATING on an diagonal. It was very similar to what I was designing for Sports-O-Rama when I was working there. But the word SKATING on the diagonal.
It was very simple Gable roofed Free-Span Steel Truss Cinderblocks-Walled Warehouse - like Building.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A. Floor: Australian Blue coated, Polyurethane coated Concrete. Floor Layout: Standard, layout not exactly oval. It is more like a Y with a very short top of Y.
Building Size: N/A. Built: N/A. Demolished: Still standing.
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Truss Cinderblocks-Walled Warehouse - like Building.
Roof: Gable.
Acres: N/A.
Operated: (Overall)-- N/A to May 5th
Oak Flats Roller Skating Rink: N/A to May 2018
District Skate Oak Flats: May 2018 to May 5, 2021.
Reason for Closure:
Oak Flats Roller Skating Rink: Said to be a controversy that forced the Fannings to sell the rink.
District Skate Oak Flats: Owner of building sold to new owner who wants a gym move in that will pay more rent than District Skate can pay monthly.
Wanted: Information regarding exact dates of open/closed, size of rink, rink materials. Also photos. Anyone knows or have photos, please let me know by emailing at [email protected]. Thank you.
