Disco Skateland 115 South Ludlow Street, Dayton, OH. This is currently a school. Formerly where Disco Skateland used to be. Clearly this was a remodel after the rink left. Sure does look like a big White Box I call that. Source: Google.
Disco Skateland 115 South Ludlow Street, Dayton, OH
Disco Skateland was a rink at 115 South Ludlow Street, Dayton, Ohio was a skating rink on the second floor of this corner building that is now a school. It was operated by Max Rogers according to a post in Dayton History Books forum online.
I do not know what the original appearance on the outside because now it is a huge "White box" look. It is sitting on a corner of South Ludlow Street and West Fourth Street. A reporter said she used to work for that town's daily newspaper and could see kids even skating outside of the rink and could see the skaters on the 2nd floor. The poster in the forum had more details as I said in last paragraph. But that is all I could find. Any more history and photos of this rink? Rarely a rink would actually be in downtown. They closed it in likely 1980s.
This rink also called "Downtown Skateland" because it was easier for anyone to know what they are talking about. You see, there are so many, at least a dozen Skateland in Ohio especially in the neighborhood of Dayton including downtown. Each one should have a name. Kind of like what Kroger grocery stores have nicknames for each one. They in fact, had a grocery store called Disco Kroger which is about to close in 2021 due to a dispute with the landlord/owner of the shopping plaza. And guess where that one is. Not in Dayton but in Atlanta, GA..
It is a Dayton public school at that building now. A school without windows. Sound familiar. They say it is to reduce distractions for students when they are in classes. Second of all, to reduce the risks of jumping out of a window. I knew of a student who did who wanted to escape from class after he was upset at something. And he survived thanks to a real high snowbank in the winter of 1977-78 (a lot of snow that winter in upstate NY), he landed on that snow bank and walked away to the dormitory. He jumped out of 2nd story window.
