Dazzles Fun Center, Dazzles of Fayetteville and Dazzles II were in Fayetteville, GA, right cross the street from another rink--a skate park that is. That skate park I am talking about was Cloned Skatepark. Dazzles roller rinks were part of the Couey Family as well as Sparkles but a separate corporation. That to help clear the differences. Carl Couey established Dazzles skating rink. Dazzles had different names but were one and the same and added "Fun Center" to make it sound like more than just a rink. The whole 3 rinks were one and the same. Just an inheritance. The reason for Dazzles II was because of the other Dazzles in Douglasville was the original.
This rink was recently operational but closed.
There were some interesting history to the rink. After Carl's death, his only surviving child, Gina Couey Prince inherited the rink. By November 2019, the rink was sold to a Maryland investor who had every intention of keeping the facility open as a rink. Once the sale was final and the investor gained a little more knowledge of the Skating rink business, decided to relist the property as an investment. Apparently in my opinion, the investor backed out after seeing the way rink business works. Yes, every business work differently. After Gina took over, apparently all that hard work Carl have done, the quality and the maintenance of the up-kept of the place declined greatly. You have seen that already in the photos above. It is quite sad. To each own, everyone has different qualities and personalities that does affect the business.
Let me give you a different perspective with a different business. One of the businessmen I admired for his talents and skills that made famous chain in the North America. He was determined to make his business successful after buying a small restaurant from three ladies. He was also inventive with a double decker in 1937. Sorry Ronnie, you were not first. Then the board of directors wanted changes with food, the inventor and owner had to get out because of the board control. With the chain sold to a major hotel chain that knew nothing about restaurant industry, they caused the chain declined and closed off many restaurants. They had to sell. This is exactly what was happening twice to this once beloved and popular Dazzles rink in Fayettevile. It was great till after Carl's death that his daughter mismanaged it and caused it to decline. And the new investor perhaps saw the same problem. The investor knew nothing and had to sell.
Good news for that restaurant chain though that it was saved and very slowly getting new franchises once again and teamed with another chain to help it to grow thanks to the current owner in Detroit.
The other Dazzles in Douglasville was sold in an auction to none other than a Couey family member! It was sold to his brother, Jeff as an attempt to keep it running in the family. When Carl died, it was forced to be sold in an auction. Who forced it, I am not sure.
More on that in separate profile. Likely Jeff was going to reopened and keep operating as Dazzles.
The remainder of the Couey Family still have Sparkles and Starlite rinks.
There were celebrities come and go at the rink. The manager of this Dazzles told me that being in Fayetteville, it had it’s share of local celebrities and family atmosphere. Big Boi from Outcast had several birthday party events. Retired Boxer Evander Holyfield used to bring his son skating periodically when he was young. Christopher from That's So Raven celebrated at the rink a time or two. Also they had a few up and coming artist Pop in through the years.
I can see the prices increased too fast. Originally listed for around 699,000 Dollars but the investor agreed to 600,000 but quickly relisted in same year for 850,000 Dollars. Apparently I believe he is overpricing it. I believe it would be best around 600,000 Dollars on the low end, not higher. I would buy it at 600 and final offer! Sadly on two things: I do not have that kind of money and if I had, the investor would not sell me that low. He is trying to fatten his wallet. He relisted it on February 19, 2020.
The Interior.
This rink had um.. wow, let me say this word, interesting perspective that it is not Tai Mahal. No way. From the former manager telling me and from what Yelpers saying about the place, it is sad. Mis-matched carpeting on the wall with the floor. Totally unmatchable. The walls were quite too busy but too much look like I remembered seeing in the Sunday newspaper comic section that you had to try to find Waldo in everything that looks repetitive. Well, exactly the same problem. You will see in the photos again if you go back up there. Wow, I never seen a rink that is closed with the Neon light carpet style of 1990s to have that much repetitive. Looks like it was redone under Gina. Sure carpets are like that but well balanced and more distinctive trying not to be like that. Unfortunately, with this one, looks like sectional of the same carpet. Not carpetiles, mind you.
It had Blue steel rail and yes, in 2017, photos were taken and I see it needed to be painted. Big time.
To step to the rink, you had to STEP up then step down to the rink. It sounded very much a swimming pool format would do.. well, some do that. I prefer all flat. I never have been to a rink that you had to step down to the skating floor.
Now, the rink itself was Virgin Hardwood Maple.
There were benches in rectangular rather than the popular common rounded thing. And it was pealing off. But one good thing they had a monitor large enough for the birthday party. Must be for birthday boy or girl with their name on it. Or for advertising. Pictures I have seen did not say that.
The name Dazzles on one end showed it appeared very graffiti like. It reminded me of Arctic Cat snowmobiles of 1990s/early 2000s having that look with their models. To compare, see here.
I may not like the graffiti but that one really reflex well when lit in the dark.
The Exterior.
The exterior really makes the building long that way. And it had 1980s style plastic canopy with the name Dazzles on plus other signs and names. Seem bit repetitive there. It featured Blue with Dazzles name on it. Two logos with one each of different color!
I see the word Fitness on there. Yes, roller skating IS a fitness as matter of fact.
The Stats:
Rink Size: N/A Floor: Virgin Maple. Floor Layout: Log, straight.
Building Size: 24,680 SF Built: 1990 Demolished: N/A
Type of Building: Free Span Steel Truss Concrete-walled Warehouse-like Building.
Roof: Gable with Faux walls hiding the Gable roof.
Acres: 3.4 Acres.
Operated: 1991 to November 2019.
Reason for Closure: N/A. Likely from what I saw in pictures, less and less customers, and deplorable conditions of the facility. New owner in November 2019 saw how difficult it is so he decided to relist and sell.
Wanted: Information regarding specific dates. Really exactly why sold.
Anyone has pictures and/or information please let me know at [email protected]. Thank you.
