Cowart's Skating Rink, 3909 West Hwy. 92, Plant City, FL
Skate Zone, 3909 West Hwy. 92, Plant City, FL.
Cowart's was a skating rink in much more quiet area of Plant City. It was set on a corner of this certain block along with a small trailer park where there are manufactured homes are. It was rather bit unusual. Perhaps this rink was supposedly be part of the trailer park? Maybe because of the parking lot was in this loop shared with the manufactured homes are sitting at. It appeared to be that way because the front is facing the trailer park, not the road, not the side of the rink. You almost cannot see the door at all from the main road! Only a good big sign easily seen is, "Jesus Saves. Believe This!" at the entrance of the parking lot for the rink and the trailer park. Next door is more of the trailer park.
Well, the rink owner, Uleric Eugene Cowart along with his wife, Martha filed on September 6, 1978 and opened in 1978 and went out of business by filing for dissolution on October 16, 1998. Apparently that year Eugene must have sold the rink to the owners of Skate Zone, Billie and Gregory Davis sometimes in 1997 or 1998 because Skate Zone owners filed with the state on May 23, 1997. The transaction occurred between those two dates. However, Skate Zone went out of business according to this same report in that Skate Zone dissolved on September 9, 2003.
Oddly, Skate Zone sign is still up according to not one but TWO Google map human view or vehicle view of the signs. One is dated in July 2016 (turn and you will see a huge clear Christian sign) and the other was in April 2011 by the entrance of a trailer park next door. You will see a beautiful Airstream parked by the rink but missing that Christian sign.
You will need to click to see both of the exact same sign with same wordings. Apparently in those 5 years span, it was unchanged! Not even a hurricane blew out the letterings for the sign! From my researching, this Skate Zone IS closed too.
Apparently the building was a concrete block building with gable roof in its original color even before it became Skate Zone. it featured a popular Miami Pink color that was and still common everywhere in Florida. I have no pictures of interior however.
From the exterior, it looked bit tired and aging. Not fancy look. Perhaps one of those simple country side rink.
