Bucyrus Skateland, Cotsamire's Skateland, and currently, Sk8 Factory were on 233 East Mansfield Street in Bucyrus, Ohio. I do not know where Cherry's Recreation Center would fit into. Date wise and for lacking of information.
The brick building on East Mansfield Street next to the fire station was the city's YMCA long ago. By the late 1960s, it had been turned into a skate rink, the Cotsamire's Skateland then in 1994, Bucyrus Skateland. Also back the day, there was at one time, a karate school but the surprising part is that the karate school was quickly abandoned leaving trophies and things there. That even surprised me. I am sure to you too. Anyone who won trophies there, please ask Andy Thoroughman if you can have those back to you if he left it there in the storage. This is quite interesting history and yes, even to Andy, the more recent owner would even felt the creepy feeling upstairs. Was something spooked the karate school that they had to leave like that? TAPS, would you do the honor check this place out?
Mr. and Mrs. Cotsamire owned and operated the Cotsamire's Skateland Bucyrus Skateland which eventually went to their son, Jamie Cotsamire and the rink was named Bucyrus Skateland. Jamie inherited then he lost interest in it and didn't want to put any more money into the place. That is what Jamie explained to Andy Thoroughman and his wife, Tenia when they had a walk through. They had it three times and it was a tough decision either to buy it or lose it forever. They bought it but I am concerned that there are no website and no information regarding if they are still operational or not. I will give them a call during the day (its 11:15 PM here working on this).
Sk8 Factory is owned by Andy and Tenia Thoroughman, husband and wife team. They renovated completely after the previous owner,
The Interior.
Since the building is two parts. Front part and rear part. The non-painted Polyurethane coated Maple floor is in the rear building and the second floor is the event hall. When it was Cotsamire's Skateland, it was a disco where teens and children would go upstairs to dance to the tunes of Disco music back the day.
The original was a YMCA and the location where the rink was, was a gym and even had stands up high to watch basketball or some activities. Quite common with the YMCA but they also had 30 rooms on second floor for shelters. But I am sure it was converted to the Disco floor to dance then under Sk8 Factory, it was an event hall.
The Exterior.
It is a two-story Red Brick Building with a low-ceiling basement that you can walk directly down from front door. Or walk upstairs. The rink is on second floor but toward the back part as you can see on Google Map. It is an L shaped building but appeared reversed when you see the picture. Right next door is the fire department so basically that is going to be a tough one but hopefully they can handle it alright. The building went through a trauma back in 1960 with a small fire that was dosed out quickly and was abandoned on that floor so it was closed off.
Before becoming a skating rink in the 1960s, the building housed the YMCA, and still has about 30 sleeping rooms on second floor, which also houses a large gymnasium with a low stage. The basement is lined with dark, narrow hallways that lead to unexpected places, with a single light on the ceiling. The building is quite old.
Actually there is a two parts for this building. The front part was designed for the rooms, offices, etc for the YMCA. Often the YMCA would have finesses and a basketball court was often used. The rear part with Gable roof is where the gym was. That is where the skating rink is or rather was from 1960s on.
