Clinton Roller Rink, 59 South Ocean Avenue, Patchogue, Long Island, NY
Rink Lyceum, 59 South Ocean Avenue, Patchogue, Long Island, NY
This was one of old, old roller rink of the 19th Century. It was housed as Clinton Roller Rink before it became The Old Lyceum which became a library, a fund raising event and social happening in that town. It was in 1885 roller skating arrived in that town. It became popular at the time nationally and the town was able to have a roller skate rink which was opened by Gillette Gelston Roe. Later, the rink was converted into a Lyceum, which is a venue for entertainment, social and political meetings. Usually in larger houses, mansions, or a large facility. The reason for the converstion to a Lyceum was because of the skating fad died down at the time.
Later, the rink/Lyceum was "turned" 90 degrees so that Gillette Roe can add more stores on a single block into a city block with a row of stores facing the South Ocean Avenue. (See photo). The rink did not last since it was about three years before stores were added and the Lyceum was in operations. Because of this, it is presently known as G. G. Roe Block which was named after the founder of businesses and was landlord of those buildings. The rink only ran for three years!
Investors bought the block and demolished the original rink building and other buildings and built new buildings and then the next owner kept changing as well. Today on that very spot, it is a Dollar General store, several small stores, a pub, and specialty stores in that very block where the rink and Lyceum used to be.
