Courtesy of a local newspaper, unknown. Dated August 1950.
All three courtesy of Google Map. Notice the evolution of the building for the bottom two? The top two was when the furniture store was there when this was taken in June 2014. But the bottom is more recent as Pet Haven. A lot better looking for the building. Bottom was taken in June 2016. What a two years make the differences!
Clanton Skating Rink 729 Second Ave North, Clanton, AL (Original)
Clanton Skating Rink was on Corner of 2nd Ave North & 8th Street, Clanton, AL which was the original, NOT in association with the new version which happens to have same name and still operational.
This pre-dates the current rink by decades. In 1950, they remodeled the rink to update its appearance according to the newspaper article that year. They had reopening on August 30, 1950 for their school year calendar system of operating the rink. Some rinks do that while they close during summer. I have no idea what newspaper it was but was shown with a photo (see above) which was posted by the current owner, for the different Clanton Skating Rink.
They went out of business and a furniture store went in then it became Pet Haven, a vet.
The Interior.
Maple floor, Log Cabin built. Small rink because of the center showed how narrow it was. It had windows on one side to lighten up inside for daytime skating.
What interesting it had industrial style tube lights hanging from the ceiling.
The Exterior.
Flat roofed Free-Span Steel (?) Truss Cinder-Block (Int) Red Brick Bricks Storefront like Building. It was very much like a storefront. The photo will show you that the windows are covered up and you can tell which side the photographer took that picture for the local newspaper. It was front end of the rink because of the windows were on the right side facing 8th Street South.
The reason for the windows to be only on one side because there is second part of the same building right next door. it is on a slight banked hill which is why you can see it is lower for next door compared to the rink. Then they renovated again and this time, opened up again the windows.. well not all of them! It does look a lot better now.
