Chez Vous Roller Rink 69th & Market St., Philadelphia, PA
Chez Vous Roller Rink 69th & Market St., Philadelphia, PA. Only I found the names, and only photograph. But nothing much to show of.
Anyone know more about this rink? Which building was the rink as I saw on Google Map?
Billboard said in November 1958 issue that Chez Nous had a 29th Anniversary skating session on Friday 21 November 1958. This puts the rink opening in November 1929. The same year as the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929 which occurred on Tuesday, 29 October 1929, which became known as "Black Tuesday" Roller skating was still very popular even through the Depression because skating can make you healthy and forget the problem. This echo to the recent state in 2020 with the Great Virus Lockdown of 2020 -- Black Monday of March 16, 2020.
Having said, roller skating is still popular and in fact, made come back in 2020. (this is already passed 2 years later and likely the trend has plateau on skating popularity) just the same as it was in 1929.
This is why this rink among many others survived throughout 1930s and World War II as well as the Great Victory of the late 1940s for the Allies and enjoyment of Fabulous 50s that roller skating held that long.
Its demise is unknown.
It was owned and operated by Joe "Reds" Kelly and his wife.
But likely in 1962 according to someone on Atlantic City Weekly that it became a dancing hall. The street was different than I got all the addresses for this rink. Likely this rink was on a 4 corners block or whole city block. Is it where the Bank of America/H&M store is located? Good question.
The Interior.
Likely it was wooden floor because it was common back the day. someone said it was on 2nd floor where the dance hall.
The Exterior.
N/A. (I really do not know which building on the corner. Anyone know? I checked Google Map, it could be any of the 3 of 4 buildings.) Is it where the Bank of America/H&M store is located? Good question.
