Google Map. As seen on the map, top view, you can tell the size of the rink itself. Minus the Aldi if you want to see the size, likely the aldi part back then was food and stuff but renovated for the grocery store.
Google Map. You noticed the corners are curved with exception the front corner of Aldi. The skating rink shape was visual-able on this photo.
Cheep Skate, 11100 Cedar Lake Rd. S., Minnetonka, MN
Cheep Skate, yes, you read right spelling. C-h-e-e-p which was a tongue in cheek for the word, "Cheap" which perhaps this rink was aiming for to make it sounds like a discounter type of entertainment. Think of a dollar store of roller rink. Maybe. I do not know.
Cheep Skate was in Minnetonka which it had its beginning likely in the 1970s according to Roller Garden website (click that rink name). That website explained about the club, Cheep Skate Dance & Figure Club, not the rink.
I do not have a lot of information but it opened that year and closed in May 2003 according to that same website. It was sold and the club, Cheep Skate Dance & Figure Club was displaced-had no rink so Roller Garden at the time welcomed the club and they were renamed.
That website had interesting history about the club and Roller Garden/Pastime rink (you will find them on the list and check them out!)
I do not have any photos unfortunately. it is now an Aldi, another "cheep" venue- grocery discounter with a couple of other stores in the same plaza. Likely this means three businesses are housed in the former Cheep Skate. Of course, the entire place was renovated. The original structure perhaps stands from Cheep Skate and it houses 3 businesses.
Let the evident prove in Google Map that it was, indeed, Cheep Skate! The building featured Art Deco futuristic curved corners as you can see where the rink was. Right down to the entire rink. By the look of it on the map, it shows how big the roller floor was. Aldi occupied where the snack-bar, rental, bathrooms, etc were located. Other two businesses occupied the rink itself. To me, it appeared the rink itself was a full size Hockey Rink. This means 85 by 200 rink.
Please look in photos.
Floor? I do not know. the looks? I do not know either.
It had a sister rink, Cheep Skates in Coon Rapids, MN. Was this same rink in Coon Rapids became Cheap Skates? Perhaps because it was closed in March 1992. The same year it was registered according to Manta. However, the Cheep Skate was running long before that year. Was the Minnetonka rink sold too but kept that name and the other Cheep Skate in Coon Rapids had to change their name to Cheap Skate? Good question. Anyone?
I think not. Cheap Skate in Facebook says the rink was opened in 1978. Was there a conflict of names? Who knows. I am having hard time trying to connect both of them but because of the differences of dates, clearly Cheap Skates is NOT related to Cheep Skate.
But then again, I see the photo of the rink exterior. The wall corners are rounded just like the Cheep Skate of Minnetonka location! Related? Your information would be helpful!
