Champ's Rollerdrome 2555 Palumbo Dr., Lexington, KY
Champ's Rollerdrome was once housed at 2555 Palumbo Drive, Lexington, Kentucky. This was one of several Champ's Rollerdromes that were in both Lexington, KY and Louisville, KY. See other Champ's in the Louisville, KY area right here on Dead-Rinks.
I do not have much information but it was Gilbert Scott at the age of 56, the owner of Scott's Roll-Arena asked Armand Champa, who owned Champs skating rinks in Louisville and had recently opened another there.
"I said, "Champ, you need to build another one just like this in Lexington,'" Scott said. "He said, 'You know what'll happen to you if I do.'
"I said, 'That's why I'm inviting you. I don't want to leave all those kids that bought skates from me without a place to skate.'"
And so Champs came to town and opened on Clays Mill Road in Lexington. Scott later held his 80th birthday party at the company's Palumbo Drive location, said Nick Champa, Armand's grandson and owner of the current Champs Entertainment Center off Reynolds Road.
Apparently this might have been the second location for Champ's in Lexington after the original location at Clays Mill Road. The current one is just off Reynolds Road.
They must have closed sometimes before 2013 because that was when the building was sold that year. Sold on July 22, 2013. Anyone knows when actually closed? Why closed?
The Interior.
N/A.
The Exterior.
It is a simple Free-Span Steel Truss Masonry/Block/Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof on a 3 acres of property. It is now two buildings on the same property. I believe the former Champ's is a warehouse while another building was built up front that is higher and is a tile and carpet retail store.
The appearance for the rink exterior is excellent even it is no longer in business. I love the clean contemporary look of the 1970s/80s look on that building as you can see the close up photo. Brown Bricks were in vouge at the time. I have seen many places with that color bricks at the time-- a couple of Catholic Churches, a major grocery store chain based out of Rochester, NY, and more. It was very contemporary as they were becoming more of.. next generation of Champ's Rollerdromes as means of exiting the stone veneer wall at other Champs.
