CC&M Skate Ranch 2117 Bethlehem Pike, Hatfield, Pennsylvania was a skating rink long before it became the current InLine 309 which is still operational. The InLine 309 is more focused on Roller Hockey center, rather than a public roller skating rink however, it IS also open to public.
But before that, all rinks were public rinks including CC&M Skate Ranch, Spin-A-Round, and Skate 309 Family Skate Center. Quite a bit of changing hands. Really.
I searched online and only found another CC&M Skate Ranch that was in Line Lexington, Pennsylvania HOWEVER, I compared to that friendly competitor, and now I understand why the address was different because the city changed the name of the road and city. It was Line Lexington, Pennsylvania which is now Hatfield, Pennsylvania. It was the one and the same location! Bethlehem Pike IS basically the same as Route 309 which is reason why the operators called their businesses, Skate 309 and Inline309.. named after the route.
Now we are getting somewhere. Ok, there were three operators who were partners in CC&M Skate Ranch from 1973 to 1984 and they were Harold Christman, Bill Clark, and Dick Miles. Then they sold the rink to Robert and Helen Murphy who were operators and coaches. They took over immediately and continued the rink as Spin-A-Round. However, Video Paradise has a list of rinks including Spin-A-Round without "Roller Skating Rink" or any sequenced name like most rinks do not include the sequenced names (go to any states on Dead-Rinks, and you will see many do not have sequenced names). And Video Paradise had the list for 1990. Therefore, the rink was still open in 1990. From what I saw that list, it looked like that video and rink historian back then went rink to rink and that is what he got. So, I assumed it was still open as late as I believe was 1998.
It may have been abandoned for about a year until the new owner, Jay Johnson purchased Spin-A-Round and called it Skate 309 Family Skate Center. Jay operated from 2000 to around 2007. So, the space between closure and purchase in 2000 made the difference. Skate 309 closed on Saturday, 07 April 2007.
When the owners of Skate 309 were being kept very busy managing another rink in New Jersey and because of the number of skating patrons dropped to about 120 to 150 skaters per night, the owners could not refuse an offer from Frank Peruzzi of Peruzzi Toyota to purchase the building for an auto servicing facility. However, it was never materialized so the building was abandoned for over six years! Good thing it did not get ruined! But.. six years is way too long with many things ruined such as perhaps damp, mold, dew, warped floor, dusts, spider webs and the whole scenario of being abandoned.
But on Sunday 03 March 2013 the announcement that the town will have a roller rink back after all according to Patch. The new operators of InLine 309 torn out the beautiful Maple wood floor for a RollerCourt floor and made the rink floor larger.
InLine 309 has since opened around June 2013. Around there.
The rink was sold to Peruzzi Toyota who planned to use it for an auto servicing facility. The Skate 309 Roller Rink was located inside a 20,000 square foot, steel walled building on 46 acres of land. The rink had a 152 x 73 foot maple wood floor and something called a "train wall" (what was that?). It was also the home of a senior citizens roller skating club. The property was sold by Jay Johnson of Drylander LLC and two other co-owners. The rink was owned by Murphy Maede from 1993 to 2003 and before that it was owned by Harold and William Christman. (Web site was still up last time I checked)
The Interior.
CC&M Skate Ranch: The rink floor was Hardwood Maple, non-painted but had some kind of coating protection. It was according to one source.. a newspaper article that it would have the size of 80 Feet wide by 180 Feet long fit inside of a 100 Feet wide by 200 Feet long. That is almost the entire size of a NHL Rink size. The building was considered small for that size however, it is that size.
The décor is unknown.
73 Feet x 152 Feet Maple wood floor was mentioned on SkateLog.
The train wall as it was mentioned on the website with a question asking "What was that?" It means skaters can be trained by holding the rail around the wall. Train as in training on the wall. Get it?
Spin-A-Round: Décor is unknown but the same size rink as it was with CC&M Skate Ranch.
Skate 309 Family Skate Center: According to Do it in Americas website, the rink size gotten smaller? It was said to be 57 Feet wide by 152 Feet long! It shrank! Why smaller? Must be they needed more room for skaters when they are off the floor. Décor theme is unknown.
InLine 309: This time, it was totally undated with entirely new floor. Of course Maple was already pushing 40 years of age lay on the floor. 50 years lifespan for a roller rink is the norm for Maple wood. If it was Brazilian Maple.. the hardest would have last longer.. Anyway, they made the floor bigger by pushing into as 85 Feet by 200 Feet, a standard NHL rink. The Décor I see on their website looks very standard Ice Rink appearance with all Ice Rink White floor with the marking of a hockey rink plus White walls and exposed ceiling.
The Exterior.
CC&M Skate Ranch: The building is 20,000 Square Feet which is 100 Feet by 200 Feet long and it does look plainly Warehouse-like building with Free-Span Steel Trusses with Gabled Roof. The color is unknown.
Spin-A-Round: The building is 20,000 Square Feet which is 100 Feet by 200 Feet long and it does look plainly Warehouse-like building with Free-Span Steel Trusses with Gabled Roof. The color is unknown.
Skate 309 Family Skate Center: The building is 20,000 Square Feet which is 100 Feet by 200 Feet long and it does look plainly Warehouse-like building with Free-Span Steel Trusses with Gabled Roof. The color was Plain White.
InLine 309: The building is 20,000 Square Feet which is 100 Feet by 200 Feet long and it does look plainly Warehouse-like building with Free-Span Steel Trusses with Gabled Roof. The color is Still White.
The whole property is quite large. 46 acres of land! That would have been great to expand into an entertainment center. I can see why the dealer wants that property. So he can unload a lot more new cars park there. Many dealers in 2000s and 2010s have done this with over ordering to meet company expectations to increase orders annually more than previous year. And the more you order, the cheaper it is. Now in 2020, it is different story.
Anyway, 46 Acres is quite large and the rink could have gone bigger. And add a practice rink. And a dance center, etc. Maybe a Go-Kart track and a Mini-Golf would also fill the void.
