Carey's Roller Rink, 1600 West Havens Avenue, Mitchell, SD
The Rink, 1600 West Havens Avenue, Mitchell, SD
Carey's was a rink on 1600 Havens Avenue. Likely it was on West Havens but according to the map, I could not find suitable location. Not even on the East because I clicked on East. you get farm land. so with that narrow down of location. Problem is which corner? Gas Station A, B, or C? Certainly not one corner there which is a small store and that store has aged looking building but too small to be a rink. That narrowed down to three other corners! The map pinpointed right in the middle of intersection. Which building this address should be standing up with hand up!
That small store's location previously was a gas station-diner called Herbie's Diner and Grosz & Snell Gas Station.
The only evidence is a age old photograph that was not a very clear B/W because of the way photographer took. Oh well. It did not give me enough perspective of that location. See photo.
According to that website, Merle Carey opened the rink in likely 1954 and ran a couple of years. After that, a new owner and new name, The Rink. Not to be confused with other The Rink locations. And perhaps not related either.
It was a white building with a Coca-Cola logo on. Rinks like Carey's back the day had such signage as to show their supplier's name. Either that or they got paid by the supplier to advertise that way. Bars are like that too with signage of their favorite beers.
The frontage did appear to be like.. a true 1950s commercial building with basic concrete block buildings, wide windows, and a basic wood or metal door upon it. IF there were more pictures, likely I would have seen actual front door. For now that is what it was.
The other thing is... the name was quite large on top of the white building really stood out to attract skaters however, it did not last.
It became The Rink and I have no other information regarding that and all I found it was about a fire. The fire occurred on January 30, 1985.
I have no other information or pictures, unfortunately. Not much information regarding both rinks. The article about the fire was apparently cut off on this e-newspaper. I tried to open or anything like that, none. Apparently it was a cut off article. So, I have no idea what it was saying.
