Burch’s Roller Rink Springville-Odenville Rd (Highway 174), Anniston, AL
Burch’s Roller Rink was on Springville-Odenville Rd (Highway 174) in Anniston, AL. Its exact location is unknown. It is said to be around 1950s and 1960s according to an article in St. Claire Times / Anniston Star website.
Mrs. Burch who owned the rink was called as “Momma Burch”) would stand on the porch to be sure the parking lot was safe because She ruled that place with much discipline. Say, you did something wrong according to her, you were out the rink and be suspended. However, she does allow them back in when she decides it is okay to do so. , until she decided if and when you were allowed back in.
Mrs. Burch's daughter, Joyce Burch, was the manager of the rink and managed a skating club membership drive.
At the Springville Museum, you can still see that giant rotating disco light, a sign from the skating rink ceiling and some skates that are on loan from private owners.
The Interior.
The interior... while I have not seen what it was like but it had a very old fashioned rotating disco light ball that was not a mirror ball or I call that diamond ball. It was a metal round ball with holes inside for a light to shine through those holes. Mirror balls reverse that ever since 1960s on. Mirror balls reflex the lights but for old fashioned holed disco ball, it was a single light shining through. Same effect. It had a sign that says "No eating on the floor" and "No smoking on the floor" with Coca-Cola logo on this tin metal sign that was on the ceiling, not on the wall!
