Photo courtesy of Bobby's rink fan page on Facebook. Photo appeared to be taken in mid-century, likely 1960s or 1970s by seeing cars on bottom of the photo. This was before the expansion that the restaurant now occupy.
Postcard courtesy of fans of Bobby's Rollaway fan page on Facebook. The interior seen in likely 1950s. Notice the stadium/movie theater fold-seat seating style. A rarity at rinks. Hard to tell because the photo is not that clear. What more interesting is the Butterfly ceiling shown in the postcard. It is quite different than the Gable roof platform seen in old black-and-white photo on top. It was not like you would see at say, the Syracuse Hancock International Airport main terminal that has Butterfly roof AND ceiling. Both the rink and the airport has Googie-style architecture.
Patch/sticker courtesy by a fan on Facebook fan page on Bobby's. Very original concept of couple skating because I have seen many patches with similar girl figure skating or couple skating in different but common form.
Bobby's Rollaway, 1593 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket, RI
Bobby's was a rink in Pawtucket that really brings a lot of memories for skaters who skated at that rink. Of course, a Facebook page dedicated to the rink with tons of photographs. Many blurred 1970s and 1980s color photographs. Bobby's sound like a fun rink to skate at the time and I sure missed my opportunity at the time.
That is because it ran from 1940s to 1990s. I sure missed my chance. Bobby's may have changed hands a couple more times. The rink was named after the original owner's son, Bobby who was a professional boxer in 1940s.
The rink owners kept the name in honor apparently. But the logo changed slightly.
It had wooden floor, maybe Maple. Definitely clear coated. However, what kind of coating is unknown.
Bobby's was a simple Gable roofed building as you can see in the photo above. An old Ariel photo from the plane or helicopter.
The rink seemed to be quite popular with figure and couple skating from 1940s to 1960s as 1970s through 1990s, teenagers because of Disco music and other music were playing after the death of Disco music popularity.
