Black Mamba Skate Park 1 Lepage Place, Syracuse, NY
Black Mamba Skate Park 1 Lepage Place, Syracuse, NY is a duel complex. It has both a roller rink and a skate park. It is excellent to have patrons to choose. That is a good part. What really attracted me and it will to you is that when you arrive, you walk in and you will see is the store! You have to go through the retail section to reach the back of the store to get your admission and get your skates if you desire to rent.
I love the store and that is a 10 but the rink section with park.. it lowered it and I only scored for that part, not the store. The store itself is about a size or slightly larger than a Hallmark Gift Store in a shopping mall. It has everything. Roller skates, skateboards, scooters, all mobile sports or wheeled sports. This is exactly what Dick's Sporting Goods missed out on because they only focused on InLine Skates in that sporting department store.
The reason also score is low is that it was FREEZING! Coldest rink I ever went. This was common during the days of rinks without any HVAC system back in 19th and first half of 20th Century before they installed their HVAC system. Any old timers will tell you about those. That is exactly what if you want to know what it is like to skate in 1880s or 1910s or something like that. Old brick building perhaps built about 80 years ago.. maybe 1940s. or older. And you have the rink.. then you know exactly how it was like that time, not like those 1970s or 80s roller rinks.
If they made it more attractive, then the score would have gone up. Maybe I am not being fair. But I am cold bodied person.
What surprised is that they do not have any floor guards and no security officers or an off-duty police officer moonlighting as security. None. Clearly the behavior at the rink must be that good! No troubles from teens. Not like what an arcade just merely about 3 miles away that was on Teall Ave went through because of that arcade dealing with drugs among its patrons there. So, that arcade was busted and shut down. Not like that at Black Mamba. So, this should really help and boost this rink better than what I scored. The skaters there I spoke are so friendly. Very.
Tonight on Saturday 20, November 2021, I came in and found only 6 people there. A family of 3 children. Cute family. They played ball that you have to skate around the rink and throw each other a ball and try to catch it. Kind of like Rollerball that James Caan performed in. I never seen anybody at any rinks since 1978 would do that and they did it.
Then I see a few others came. A group of friends.. likely teens and early 20s. That was about 8 of them. Slowly increased. Then there was a birthday party came so late at around 8 30 or 9! Yes, they brought in the balloons for a birthday party. By the way, sorry I did not say, "Happy Birthday!" but hey, Happy Birthday!
As I was leaving after I could not stand the cold and very trippy on Roller Court. Yes, I heard and felt the thumping alright. Just like you are driving on the highway and you feel and hear the thumping. Thump thump thump.
It was blue. And the lines I see on the floor. Clearly red marked for sealing cracks. Seems it needs a new floor. A skater who came by herself said that and I agree with her. Real nice lady in her 30s from Utica, NY. an hour away from the rink for her. Glad to see she knows the alphabets for American Sign Language but she should sign because she has HOH and Deaf family members. I am surprised they did not go to Rome School for the Deaf. I think her family members mainstreamed.
As I was leaving around 9:15ish.. more people came but I thought they were closing at 10pm. I need to ask them if they do have a later session. But their website says 10pm.
This rink is my 19th rink I skated.
Their score is 5.1 for 27 of 28 although 4.9 for all 28 as listed (except for food).
One more thing, this is their new relocation in December 2020 due to their previous landlord, Moombeam LLC who then owned ShoppingTown Mall in DeWitt, NY was putting the mall out of business and let the county seize the mall for an auction. All tenants in the mall were relocated. Pretty much same materials they had in the old location. It was in the former Media Play. In fact, they had 2 stories of skate park in ShoppingTown. Media Play was a 2 story store at the time before its closure in late 1990s. The rink floor is pretty much the same floor that was relocated. Size of the rink is unknown and the venue size is unknown, not the mall size.

Friendly Admission staff -- 10 (Friendly with me, smiled. Good staff and listening well).

Communication -- 10 (Face to face, clear, no music in store section, smiled well)
Floor Guard Behavior -- 0 (no floor guards available.)
Accessibility -- 10 (ADA accessible since it has a ramp to enter the door from parking lot).
Arcade Functioning -- 10 (noticed a family winning prizes from machines).
Disco lights display/working -- 10 (Looks fine, no damages)
Style of lighting -- 7 (It was ok, no Diamond ball, no Starburst lights though).
Décor age-ness -- 5 (It is a new place but has that aged look because of old brick building).
Location -- 3 (my concern is bit hard to see, not on any "main street" which can hurt business. it is in residential area. 2 blocks from James Street which is the main street of Eastwood area where the rink is. Behind Scared Melody Christian Bookstore and Plaza.
