Big Walnut Skate Club was once a roller skating rink at 345 McGill Street, Sunbury, Ohio before it became a new family entertainment center that has no roller rink to skate called, Fun in the Jungle. Really big disappointment regarding no more skating there. In fact Sunbury Skate Club was also mentioned as a name before the change. Likely Big Walnut Skate Club came first followed by Sunbury Skate Club then Fun in the Jungle.
Likely it was Big Walnut Skate Club that Ed and Bobbie Herd owned, whom they bought the business in 1984 but the rink was first opened in 1966.
As for Sunbury Skate Club, the The McAtees owned the rink since 2005. They sold it in 2016 to Drew Tuttle.
The Interior.
It had or still have the non-painted Polished Maple floor. It covered pretty much almost entire place. Photos do not show much but it appeared to be that way. I do not know what the appearance was like when it first opened in 1966. Or the later years. But in more recent times, it was solid Blue color walls with very simple disco lights decoration. Hardly used much as seen in photos. I have seen it but they all have too many people close up in photos and I could not see entire place without any people. It is all moot to show here. Same with the photo of the exterior.
The Exterior.
It is a Free-Span Steel Trusses Cinderblocks-Walled Warehouse - like Building with Gable roof. It sits immediately behind the AFW buildings. This is terrible location to do so because you do not have any good exposure to the public you have an active business. Although they have been operating for 50 years of skating and now over half-dozen years of a kiddie fun center. It is within feet of the AFW building as matter of fact.
